When the Spanish coast comes a-callin’, the only sensible course of action is to give yourself over to the lure of sand, sea and sangria. All that awaits at Camping La Media Legua, a well-equipped spot between the seaside resorts of Benidorm and L’Albir (five minutes’ drive to either), on the Costa Blanca. The site is slightly inland, so you’re pretty much guaranteed a peaceful stay, undisturbed by the crowded pubs and lively restaurants along the coast; on the other hand, those establishments are close enough that if you want to join the party, you can do so with ease. In addition to spacious pitches, the site comes with indoor and outdoor pools (the latter fringed with palms that frame views of the Parc Natural de la Serra Gelada peaks), a gym for those who cannot go without leg/abs day for even a week, a pétanque court, a play area and a paddling pool for the kids. In short, whether you’re an active type, a ‘chill by the pool’ type or a family with young kids, you should find plenty of diversions here. Not forgetting your four-legged friends, who can run to their waggy tail’s content in the dog park. Other facilities include a bright, light-filled restaurant and a supermarket (handy for those who want to do their own cooking; a barbecue area is also available), plus modern toilet blocks with facilities for disabled guests and a launderette.

Local attractions

Two large expanses of sand at Benidorm are separated by a small headland with the Mirador del Castell - Balcó de la Mediterrània, a lookout point with white balustrades and a compass rose. Take a breather under the palm trees in Parc d’Elx before going for a stroll along the wavy beachside promenade. Aqualandia (10 minutes’ drive), in the foothills of the Serra Gelada, has waterslides, a slow river and a huge Jacuzzi pool. Residents at Terra Natura (10 minutes) include camels, elephants and colourful parakeets, while the thrill rides at Terra Mítica (15 minutes) are loosely based on ancient cultures. Take in views of Alicante (35 minutes) from the 9th-century Castell de Santa Bàrbara – see if you can locate the blue cupola of the Cocatedral de Sant Nicolau de Bari d’Alacant from up there. In town, the Basilica of St Mary of Alicante has an ornate façade, while the archaeological museum has collections ranging from Iberian prehistory and the Roman era to the Middle Ages.

Disliked Our only gripes ~ site is very open and carpark-like and you really need transport (ideally a car) in order to see the decent places nearby

Liked De korte afstand van de ligging sanitair gebouw.
Ook de wasmachine en droogkast waren in orde.

Disliked Omdat we niet honden eigenaars zijn, vinden we het blaffen niet altijd leuk.

De douches zijn heel onhandig om toiletgerei kwijt te kunnen dat droog blijft

Disliked Pitch needs some shade, felt very exposed and was difficult to get tent pegs in and out as the ground is very hard
