Sporty families, this one’s for you. There’s everything you need at Camping Albox for active holidays, from the outdoor pool to four tennis courts and three paddle tennis courts. You can ramp up the fitness regime (must you?) in the (very well-equipped) gym and then chill out with a good book in the wooden sauna. Daily life may revolve around the tennis courts and pool here, but there’s plenty to do after dark as well. Barbecue back at your cosy base, get together with fellow guests over a jar in the bar, or order a takeaway. In summer, there’s sometimes entertainment in the evening too. This secluded spot is surrounded by craggy mountains, olive groves and orchards, and yet it’s only a five-minute drive from Albox, a traditional Spanish white town with markets on Tuesday and Saturday where you can pick up fresh local goodies like cheese and chorizo. Back at the camp, family-friendly facilities include a play area for younger kids, a launderette service and washing-up area, with showers and loos in the amenities block, while teens can keep up with their mates on wifi (an extra charge).

Liked Sitio muy tranquilo y con unas vistas excepcionales.
Era finales de Noviembre y no se podia usar piscina y demás pero tenia buena pinta.
El restaurante con carta amplia y lo que comimos estaba muy rico.

Local attractions

Should you have a break in your hectic tennis schedule, jump in the car to explore the white villages in the foothills around Almería. Huércal-Overa (30 minutes’ drive) has a restored hilltop castle to check out, and Mojácar (50 minutes) has a cute, flower-filled old town to nose around. Nijar (an hour and 15 minutes) is worth the hilly drive for its bizarre cliff formations, coves and sculpted sand dunes, and you can summon up your inner cowboy around Tabernas (an hour), where canyons and semi-desert landscapes have stood in for the Wild West many times on film. Treat the kids to Mediterranean swims in coastal towns like Garrucha (45 minutes) and Puerto del Rey (40 minutes), and then mooch around whitewashed backstreets and do a bit of tapas-bar hopping. Almería (an hour and 15 minutes) also has gorgeous family beaches overlooked by a spectacular Moorish fort.
