- Limpopo site next to the Selati river, on the road to Phalaborwa
- A 45-minute drive from the Phalaborwa Gate at Kruger National Park
- Family-friendly safari tents with private kitchens; wildlife on site
When you’re not fond of roughing it, but you’re keen to see some wildlife, book yourself in for a farm-based glamping break at Little 5 Camp. Set on the banks of the Selati river, just off the R71 road, the site is a 45-minute drive from the Phalaborwa Gate at Kruger National Park, and just over the river is the Selati Reserve where the big five animals can sometimes be seen lapping up water.
But you don’t have to go that far to see indigenous wildlife. Simply have a wander around the leafy seven-acre gardens and unspoilt bush at the property and you may get to see giant plated lizards, bearded woodpeckers and white-bellied sunbirds – so be sure to take the binoculars with you. If you’re really lucky, you might also hear lions and leopards roaring at night.
And now back to your accommodation. That’s in spacious safari tents tucked into the undergrowth and hidden away from each other for your privacy. Each unit comes with comfy double beds in the roomy sleeping tent, an ensuite bathroom and a kitchen space with all the basics (stove, sink, a few utensils) to conjure up simple meals.
An outdoor dining area stands adjacent to the kitchen, and guests also have access to barbecue facilities. A bar-restaurant is just a five-minute drive away, making it easy to go for a meal out too.

Local attractions
Sprawling Kruger National Park (45 minutes’ drive) is famed for its guided safaris with the possibility of seeing big cats, elephants and buffaloes, myriad birds and reptiles. Less well-known is Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (an hour and 30 minutes), where you can learn about the rescue and subsequent release back into the wild of hundreds of animals including hyenas, antelopes, turtles and lizards as well as birds of prey.
Book 24 hours in advance for a tour of Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (an hour and 15 minutes) to encounter rare cheetahs, leopards and white rhinos (among other species) while hearing more about their conservation. Always wanted to get up close to elephants? Rise early (tours start at sunrise) to meet members of the Jabulani Herd at Elephant Moments (an hour and 10 minutes) in Kapama Private Reserve.
Explore further afield by driving the scenic Panorama Route to spectacular Blyde River Canyon (also known as Motlatse Canyon, over two hours), where you can spot natural formations such as The Pinnacles rock tower and Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the latter formed by several millennia of water erosion along the river bed.
