- Environmentally conscious site 10 minutes’ drive from Portorož
- Sečovlje Saltpans Natural Park five minutes’ drive; Piran 20 minutes
- Dogs welcome; cycle hire; communal kitchen and firepit
Spectacular sunsets, abundant seafood and seafront bike rides – what’s not to love? If that little combo fires up your camping imagination, consider staying at Kaki Plac.
This small site in the Istria region sits about 10 minutes’ drive from the northern Adriatic resort of Portorož, with its well-tended sandy beach, calm waters in a sheltered bay, and a wide seafront promenade that’s just the place for a family outing on two wheels. Bicycles are available to hire at the site, if you don’t have your own with you. And if being at the seaside inspires you to have a go at paddleboarding or other watersports, the site owners can suggest reliable local outfits.
Immersed in lush vegetation that provides welcome cooling shade in summer, the site occupies a series of former agricultural terraces where olives and grapes were once grown. A few remnants of these cultivations remain along the road leading to the outskirts of Portorož and an industrial estate with a handful of large supermarkets (five minutes’ drive, or a 15-minute walk).
Mind you, if it’s fruit and vegetables you’re after, you’d be better off having a chat with the site owners, who would be happy to direct you to trusted farmers with excellent produce to sell. This is part of their environmental beliefs, which also include renewable energy sources and separate waste collections. Dogs are welcome at the site, which is also kitted out with a communal kitchen, a firepit area with plenty of seating, and a toilet/shower block.

Local attractions
The brackish waters and marshes of Sečovlje Saltpans Natural Park (five minutes’ drive) are home to hundreds of bird species, including flamingos, cranes and egrets, as well as hares and deer. A museum explains the various stages of salt production, while a thermal centre has treatments such as salt-pan mud wraps and sea salt scrubs.
Nature Reserve Strunjan (15 minutes) occupies a lush promontory featuring a vertiginous cliff (formed by the accumulation of various types of rock), a lagoon and salt pans, among other habitats.
On a peninsula stretching into the Gulf of Trieste, historic Piran (20 minutes) has a pretty old town with narrow cobblestoned alleys and pastel-coloured buildings with shuttered windows. It looks a little like Venice, which is not surprising as the town was part of the Venetian Republic for five centuries. Stop for a drink in the central square (Tartinijev trg), then check out the street art near the Duomo di San Giorgio church.
