It's free, quick and easy!
- Dog-friendly park right by the beach just south of Leithfield
- A half-hour drive to Christchurch; 15 mins to Waipara Hills wineries
- Kitchen and barbecue area on site; playground and pool next door
Taking an easy drive along the 467-kilometre Alpine Pacific Touring Route is a wonderful way to experience the eastern coast of the South Island – but then again, so is settling down for a slow-paced few days by the beach. And whichever approach suits you best, you’ll be in a fine spot at Leithfield Beach Holiday Park, right by the beach about five minutes’ drive south of Leithfield.
Whether you’re passing by or settling in for a little while, this family-friendly park makes a great choice – and it’s also one of the few places around here that welcomes dogs at all times of year too. You’ll be able to hit the beach in no time from here, but a wall of mature hedging means that the park is sheltered from any cold easterly breezes.
All the essentials are sorted here: guests have access to a fully equipped camp kitchen, a laundry room and a barbecue area with outdoor seating, along with toilets and hot showers in a contemporary and accessible building. A camp store/dairy opens seven days a week for supplies, and there’s also a food takeaway service on Friday and Saturday evenings. A café and restaurant are within walking distance, and there are plenty more in the local area (plus pubs and wineries aplenty…)
There’s plenty to do in the local area too, with fishing, surfing and the Kowai Walk all very close by. Closer to home there’s a kids’ pool, some tennis courts and a couple of playgrounds just next to the park.

Local attractions
A great way to get a taste of your surroundings is to follow the Kowai Walk, which takes you along the Kowai River to the local town of Leithfield. Some time on Leithfield Beach (just by the park) is a good option too of course, but you should also make time to visit the beaches at Amberley (10 minutes’ drive), Motunau (40 minutes) and Gore Bay (an hour and 20 minutes).
Other ways to explore the local area include a ride on Weka Pass Railway (20 minutes) or a day trip into the Waipara Hills (15 minutes) to visit a few wineries and sample a glass or two along the way. While you’re in that area, stop by at Iron Ridge Quarry (20 minutes) to see the outdoor artworks in its sculpture park.
For different days out, you might like to head south to Christchurch (half an hour) to ride the trams and visit the International Antarctic Centre, or north to Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools (an hour and 15 minutes) for a family-friendly day out in the mountain pools and waterslides.
