Hikers, unite. For if you're up for an Italian walking holiday, among the lush green land, hills and valleys of spectacular Tuscany (and if not, why not?), the Lucca province's Camping Lago Apuane to the north of the region is the very place for you.
And why? Because this lakeside site is a tiptop place for hiking and outdoor holidays, as it's set in the Serchio valley in the green, thickly forested and mountainous Garfagnana area. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, climbing and caving are all top activities here, around the Garfagnana and the two nearby national parks. For alternating outdoor days with urban adventures, Lucca is about 70 kilometres away and Florence 90.
The site is surrounded by beech, cedar and fir trees and is crossed by a small river for swimming and fishing. It has its own restaurant specialising in regional cuisine, serving traditional Tuscan bread, homemade pastas, mushroom and polenta platters as well as grilled meat, cheese boards, pies and wood oven pizzas.
Other facilities include bike hire, a playground, a food shop and free wifi.

Local attractions
To the north of Lucca between the Apuan Alps and the Apennines, the Serchio valley has a different landscape than typical Tuscany, of mountains and forests rather than vineyards and olive groves. It's a popular place for fishing and canoeing as well as hiking and mountain biking.
Camping Lago Apuane is in the Apuan Alps Natural Park, an area of deep valleys and high peaks. It and the mountains of the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park have many hiking trails crisscrossing them and several famed spots at which to stop off, such as the Pietro Pellegrini botanical gardens, the marble quarries of the Alps and the remains of the Roman necropolis near the town of S. Bartolomeo.
For town days, potter around Castelnuovo di Garfagnana 24 kilometres away or Barga within 37; Lucca is a bit further afield at 70 kilometres. The Selva del Buffardello adventure park is 15 kilometres away.
Canyoning, rafting, rock climbing and caving are also popular nearby.
