- Quiet, scenic pitches at a Tuscany winery on the edge of Barga
- Grotta del Vento half an hour's drive; 45 minutes to Lucca
- Wine tastings available on site; shop for wine and other local produce
Ever fancied staying overnight at a Tuscany vineyard? Here's your chance – and in a particularly fabulous location as well. Area Sosta Camper La Cantina del Vino is in a scenic spot surrounded by gorgeous views of the Tuscan hills, and yet it’s only about a 10-minute walk from the centre of Barga (very handy for picking up supermarket supplies, finding a restaurant meal or grabbing a coffee, cake or cool drink).
That location on its own makes this a most attractive spot – quiet and scenic, yet very convenient for amenities. There are some handy facilities on site too, including a wifi connection, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point and bathrooms with toilets and showers. Pitches are on well-kept grass with plenty of space for guests to put up awnings and gazebos.
The views are lovely too, but the main draw of staying at a vineyard is of course the chance to learn a bit more about the wine and try a few samples. Both of these are options here – your hosts Francesca and Pietro are both qualified sommeliers who will tell you a bit about their process and introduce you to the range of wines produced here and nearby (you’ll just need to let them know in advance that you'd like to organise a tasting).
Found something you particularly like? You’ll be able to pick up a bottle in the shop, along with other local produce including olive oils. And if you really, really like it, the team here can also arrange both domestic and international shipping so you can enjoy it at home and share among friends (or not…).

Route directions
It's best to arrive from San Pietro in Campo, as this is a very easy route to drive, and avoids the centre of Barga (which is a narrower, more winding route).

Local attractions
If you only have time to do one thing it should be a stroll around the hilltop town of Barga – it’s a pretty place that’s home to a Romanesque church and the Home Museum Pascoli. Bonus points if you happen to be here when the museum is hosting a poetry event (it’s the former home of poet Giovanni Pascoli) or the summer jazz festival is in swing. Intriguingly, the town’s links with Scotland also mean that it hosts an annual fish and chips festival.
The rural surroundings are fabulous too, so plan walks or bike rides nearby, perhaps taking in the Hermitage of Calomini (20 minutes’ drive), Grotta del Vento (half an hour) or Lake Vagli (40 minutes). There's horse riding nearby too, or canyoning and caving at Parco Avventura Levigliese (20 minutes).
For a real change of scenery, it’s a 45-minute drive to Lucca for the Renaissance walls and Casa Puccini museum, or just over an hour to Pisa for a whole lot of attractions (not just the tower…).
