Local attractions
If you’re keen on your social history, then Chemnitz (20 minutes’ drive) is the place for you. As its name suggests, The Industrial Museum is dedicated to the backstory of industrialisation in Saxony, with exhibits ranging from steam engines to weaving looms and supercars. You can see vintage trams at the Strassenbahnmuseum, and learn a great deal about the local area at the family-friendly State Museum of Archaeology, with its ancient Roman archaeological finds and dioramas on local wildlife.
The European Capital of Culture 2025, Chemnitz sits on its namesake river and has an abundance of Socialist Realism sculptures (including one of Karl Marx) and Brutalist architecture, neatly contrasting with its 14th-century centre, which is a mash-up of baroque, Renaissance and Art Nouveau townhouses lining the market square.
When you’re travelling with kids, there are deer, bison and wild boar in the Wildgatter Oberrabenstein (10 minutes), and big cats, amphibians and keeper talks at the expansive Chemnitz Zoo (15 minutes).
