'Be active during your vacation,' advise the staff of Camping und Ferienpark Brilon – a mantra that's a cinch to sort from here, whatever time of year you visit. The site is on the edge of the Rothaar Mountain Nature Park, in the Hochsauerlandkreis or High Sauerland district, a region famed for its many mountains and forests and its position as the most-visited tourist spot of Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia. Mountain biking, hiking, boating and watersports are all popular picks in the summer months, alongside skiing, bobsleighing and other snow sports in winter: the park is a kilometre from the ski resort of Poppenberg, and just over half an hour's drive from the snowy sports centre of Winterberg. Even more niftily, a nine-hole golf course is opposite the grounds for teeing off in green surroundings; a horse riding centre is next door, and the Rothaarsteig, a 154-kilometre hiking trail from Brilon to Dillenburg, runs through the site. (Too much action? Nearby town Brilon has a spa park and is a state-recognised Kneipp health resort.) You can ditch the car when you arrive to get to all this and more, as all guests get a free Sauerland Card, to access the public transport of the Sauerland without paying a cent. Two bus stops are at the park entrance. Camping und Ferienpark Brilon is set in highly scenic surroundings, on a Poppenberg hill with loads of space all around. It has roomy grass pitches, showers and toilets, chemical disposal and a launderette.

Local attractions

This handsome part of North Rhine-Westphalia is famed for the outdoor activities of the Sauerland, from sailing, scuba diving, hiking and cycling any time you fancy, to skiing and other winter sports in the colder months. Walking and hiking trails start straight from the site, including the 154-kilometre Rothaarsteig path, running all the way to Dillenburg on the German-Dutch Orange Route. For cycling, the Sauerland has over 1,700 kilometres of trails to tackle, on terrain to suit all levels from easy-going cyclists to determined mountain bikers. Winter sports are a kilometre away at the ski resort of Poppenberg and at the snowy sports centre of Winterberg, 30 kilometres away. A big outdoor pool is within 15 minutes' walk; by car, it's the same amount of time to Lagunen-Erlebnisbad Willingen, a centre with two subtropical indoor pools, two outdoor pools, a Jacuzzi and a spa complex with steam baths, plunge pools and saunas. If you'd rather get into the water in natural surroundings, try the scuba diving at the former quarry of See Im Berg, 10 minutes' drive from the site. For a family day out, greet the animals at Wild- und Freizeitpark Willingen, under 20 kilometres away.

Liked Great site, we’ve used this campsite three times already on our way through Germany. Fantastic location, lovely staff and guests, clean facilities and plenty of them, never had to wait for shower.

Liked Nette camping, goede voorzieningen op de D camping plaatsen. Sanitair en douche netjes en schoon. Vriendelijke camping receptie

Disliked Fietsen huren in de omgeving een drama, geen aanbod voor de tourist. Maar hier kan de camping niets aan doen, maar heeft ons wel doen besluiten eerder te vertrekken helaas

Liked Easy check in, pleasant staff, perfect pitch for our 5 metre tent with henges both sides and plenty space for our truck. Water and electric both provided together on the actual pitch which was a great boon. Grass and hedges well kept with no holes on the pitch or worn bits. Facilities block was spotlessly clean and everything worked. Views from the site are excellent and transport to and from Brilon is simple. One of the best sites we have ever stayed on, a must if you are in the area.
