It's a toss-up between aquatic adventure and inland explores at Camping Les 2 Salamandres – this leafy Charente-Maritime park is a breezy 10 minutes' drive from the sea, but south-west France's pic-worthy villages and sun-drenched countryside can be explored as soon as you step foot outside the site.
Arces-sur-Gironde is a relaxed little town on the Côte de Beauté – aptly named indeed, for beauté abounds in this part of the world. That includes leafy Camping Les 2 Salamandres, where well-tended trees and shrubs have been planted all around for shade, privacy and… well, because they're pretty. There's plenty of outdoor furniture here, too, and barbecues are welcome, so you'll definitely have a chance to take in the lush site surrounds at lunch or dinner time. For self-catered meal prep, check out the on-site food shop or the local supermarket (10 minutes' drive).
On sunny days (and they're not in short supply in this part of France) you can head to the pool for outdoor swims, drop the kids at the play area or wander down to the pétanque court and get working on those underarm throws. Table tennis matches can also be sorted, and there's a nature walk around the park if you need help winding down after all that activity (or a peaceful place to exercise your dog).

Local attractions
Heading to the coast? Talmont-sur-Gironde (10 minutes' drive) is the closest seaside town you'll find. Non, there's no beach here, but what this place lacks in plage it makes up for in pretty seaside vistas – the town's central streets are squeezed onto a rocky peninsula, with highlights including whitewashed cottages and a clifftop Romanesque church. Looking around for a date night or a dinner en famille? Head here for fresh fish dishes with a lavish dollop of sea views.
If you'd rather be beach-bound instead, make tracks for the several sandy spots around Meschers-sur-Gironde (15 to 20 minutes), or continue up the coast towards Royan (30 minutes), a tip-top resort on the Atlantic coast. Tee off here surrounded by sand dunes and pine trees at the town's 18-hole golf course, catch the ferry over to Cordouan lighthouse (45 minutes by boat) or get a taste of local terroir at the town's covered market.
For a bit of history on your hols, stop off at Le Fâ open-air Gallo-Roman museum (10 minutes). For more handsome old buildings, check out Plassac's gorgeous château, where there's also a distillery that can be toured by visiting cognac fans (30 minutes).
