  • Family campsite in leafy parkland at historic Guise in Hauts-de-France
  • Familistère Guise and Castle of Guise within 20 minutes' walk
  • Fishing and canoeing on the River Oise; reading corner; shared kitchen
Mightily pretty landscaped pitches and a prevailing sense of peace are what you can expect at Camping de la Vallée de l’Oise, set in around 10 acres of leafy parkland on the outskirts of historic Guise in Hauts-de-France. The grass pitches and various glamping options are also handily close to the River Oise, where you can fish from the banks or hire canoes for trips downstream. When you feel like a bit of a run around with the kids or friends, indulge in some gentle competition at tennis, ping-pong or table football… but if you’d rather just chill on the tree-shaded site, board games and a reading corner are at your disposal too. A communal kitchen is available in the function room, where you can magic up simple meals and brew a cup of coffee – and of course, the bars and restaurants of Guise are only around 10 minutes’ stroll away. Thanks to the site’s proximity to EuroVelo 3, which runs between Trondheim and Santiago de Compostela in Spain, it’s also a handy overnighter for long-distance cyclists completing their pilgrimage. Secure bike storage is available, while puncture-repair kits are available at reception along with refreshing cold drinks.

Powered grass and gravel tent site

Liked: Plenty of flat grassed areas. Clean and well maintained utilities with plentiful hot water. Even had a large hall with cooking facilities at one end (microwaves, hot plates, e kettle, sinks) - v. useful if it's raining. At other end of hall were a couple of exercise walkers! plus a small library and table games. Just a 10min walk to centre of a v. attractive town. Bargain price for a solo tent and a friendly easy check-in.

Disliked: No toilet paper but that was as expected!

Powered grass and gravel tent site

Liked: Pitches were great sizes and loved that you could park the car next to the tent. Facilities were really good, showers were free and lovely and warm, washing up stations were great and toilets were clean. Indoor area was lovely and lots to do to keep entertained in there, including free freezer to re-freeze ice blocks.

Powered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Spacious pitch with bushes in between. Reasonably clean

Disliked: The reception on arrival was quite frosty and the lady refused to speak any English even though we tried to speak broken French. It felt a bit like a school. The communal kitchen available was dirty as was the function room and was quite musty and dusty. Wi-Fi was non existent, the showers were basic and the lights didn’t appear to work so was quite dark. There was only one proper toilet in the gents and ladies (other was a hole in the ground) and men’s toilet was blocked with excrement. Washing up facilities were good until the lights went off so we ended up washing up by torch light on our phones. The site felt quite tired and dated. On arrival we were also charged an additional amount for our 14 year old even though I had added the age to our booking on a Pitchup. All bars, shops and restaurants in the Centre were closed and was a bit like a ghost town. It felt quite tired and run down and a lot of dog excrement on the pavements. Glad we had only booked the 1 night and would not recommend or stop again.

Powered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Lovely level pitches marked with hedges. Indoor kitchen and games available. Hot showers, limited toilets and great washing up facilities. Quiet site, easy walk to town with a couple of restaurants and boulangerie. Intermarché and Aldi about 2km away. Electric 6amp but needs French plug adapter. Eurovelo 3 bike route very close, some lovely great walks and castle to visit. Really enjoyed our stay and extended it by a night.

Powered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Site was in a quiet spot with large pitches separated on the whole by large hedges. Shade available if you wanted it. Close to town easy 10 minute walk, or 2 min cycle ride.

Disliked: No information given on arrival and to be honest it felt line our arrival was an intrusion and inconvenient. Electric hook up woefully under rated 3 amps and advertised WI FI was non existant. It would have helped if the reception staff actually spoke english, We did try our French but it seemed not to be up to the required standard. First night the utility block was in total darkness. It also became apparent that people were living on the site in the communal areas. The guy in a small tent behind is talked on his phone till the early hours and was also obviously living full time on the site. The whole place looked tired and in need of a good make over. Not what we expected and certainly not what was advertised on pitch up. Wont recommend.

Local attractions

Guise is a pretty town with plenty to see and do. Start your exploration at The Familistère Guise (20 minutes’ walk), built in the mid-19th century by industrialist Jean-Baptiste André Godin as housing for his workforce, and now a gigantic ‘living museum’. Don’t miss the ruined Castle of Guise (15 minutes), where you can have a forage around in underground tunnels and admire views over rooftops to the River Oise from the ramparts. For a moment of quiet contemplation in nature, head for the lovely riverside Jardin de la Presqu’île (25 minutes). To continue with the cultural theme, you may like to visit a couple of the fortified churches of Thiérache; the nearest are red-brick, 14th-century Église Saint-Nicolas in Englancourt (20 minutes’ drive) and Église Saint-Martin, topped by a black-tiled spire in Fontaine-lès-Vervins (25 minutes). If you’d rather do your exploring on foot, have a meander along the banks of the Oise from your pitch, or strike out on paths through woodland and fields in the Parc Naturel Régional de l’Avesnois (half an hour) – and if the kids are needing to run off surplus energy, take them kart racing at Labyrinthe Aventure (50 minutes).
