Who doesn't like outdoor evenings by the pond and bike rides to local farmers' markets? Indeed, you will have something to be pleased about at Camping La Viotterie in the centre of the Mayenne countryside. Guests can easily find spots around the site to spend their time, including a fishing pond, playground, heated swimming pool (in July and August only) and a communal kitchen (between May and December). The family-friendly site is in La Boissière, where it’s all about simple holidays full of relaxation and good times… by night, gather around the communal firepit. For rustling up dinner, the kitchen is equipped with tables, chairs, utensils, dishes, a fridge, hob, oven, dishwasher and barbecue. Take your finished product down to the pond for a quiet alfresco dinner. The pond on this farm is surrounded by greenery, so it’s a quiet area with patches of shade. The farm animals are a treat to visit and the folk here will let you get involved in their morning feeds or animal tours later in the afternoon if you wish (a free animal visit is included in your stay). When you’re not busy recharging your batteries around this ecological site (which has a sanitary block for your comfort, by the way), the games area is set up for games like table tennis, badminton and football. Depending upon the weather, the pool is semi-covered. It also has a giant beanbag. Ask to borrow a tandem or a bike to get out on the walks and bicycle rides nearby… local farmers markets could be your end destination, or the restaurants and shops in Renazé, 25 minutes’ cycle away.

Liked: Absolutely charming place. The hosts couldn’t have been more welcoming. It has a wonderfully bohemian feel and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Families with young children played in the woods and sounds of chatter and laughter filled the air. Wholesome, simple group activities like meet the animals, bracelet making or bring your own food barbecues are laid on most days. The communal cooking area is a great place to meet and chat to fellow international travellers. To cap it all, we were able to buy home made bread, delivered still warm in the morning - delicious!
If you want a pristine modern site, this isn’t for you, we however, found it utterly adorable- thank you x

Liked: The campsite was small, not many pitches or permanent cabins, very friendly and amenities were just right for a camping holiday.

Disliked: There was no one around upon arrival so it is a bit tricky to know where to set up.

Local attractions

Adventurous types, get into gear… there are more than just walks and bike rides out in the Mayenne countryside. At La Rincerie in La Selle-Craonnaise (20 minutes’ drive), you could join in with orienteering, archery or mountain biking activities or captain a catamaran on the lake. There’s wakeboarding and kayaking too – or those of you who are looking for a lazier type of afternoon could go for a simple swim from the small beach. Track down some unusual activities that are sure to mix things up… perhaps a sledge ride at Husky d'Anjou (25 minutes), where you'll be pulled along by a pack of Siberian huskies, or a tour of an underground slate mine 126 metres below the surface at La Mine Bleue (15 minutes)? If nature and animals are high up on your wishlist, Terra Botanica (40 minutes) will help you to learn about heaps of plant life, while Refuge de l'Arche (25 minutes) has over 120 different types of animals, from brown bears and buffaloes to big cats.
