- Spectacular, friendly and spotless family-run mountain site
- A 20-minute drive from Lourdes and 40 from Pont d'Espagne
- Two mountain-view pools, and restaurant serving homemade dishes
‘A wonderful place to be’ and ‘would highly recommend’ are just a couple of comments about Camping du Lac which, you’d be right in guessing, lies right by a lake (or a reservoir, to be more accurate).
Family-run by the Peffabets (‘lovely’, ‘friendly’ and ‘helpful’) and a few minutes' walk from the little Pyrenean village of Arcizans-Avant in the Hautes-Pyrénées, this pristine place is surrounded by spectacular mountain peaks and spot on for visiting Lourdes, 20 minutes' drive away. Pont d'Espagne and Lac d'Guabe are 40 and 50 minutes from the site.
'Spectacular’ probably doesn’t quite cut it either when describing the surrounds, so it’s probably time to take a peek above and let the pics speak for themselves. Back? As you'll have seen there’s heaps of green and tree-filled space; a snack bar terrace; a shop with shelves filled to the gills with foodie bits; two pools, and outdoorsy and sporty options in the locale like river swimming and cycling.
After working up an appetite, head to the restaurant for homemade fare, for ‘the food was so good we had to eat there more than once,’ says one previous guest.
The spacing and landscaping of the pitches – some flat and some gently sloping, with high hedges and plentiful trees – means the site never feels crowded and you’ve always got plenty of space and privacy. The word ‘spotless’ crops up many a time in reviews of the amenities too – and with added extras like kid-sized sinks and a tiny toilet too, bathtime here might even be trouble-free…?

Local attractions
As one expects from such a pristine mountain location, hiking and cycling options are all around. Col du Tourmalet, an hour and 20 minutes’ drive away, rises to a lofty 2,115 metres above sea level and is the highest paved mountain pass in the French Pyrenees – spot on for hardy bikeheads to whizz at speed around hairpin bends.
For a spectacular hiking spot not to be missed, take a trip an hour and 20 minutes by car to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cirque de Gavarnie, for ambles among Pyrenean limestone circles formed by long-melted glaciers.
Also well worth a road trip is Pont d'Espagne, a smashing site in the Pyrenees National Park with vistas out over Vignemale, the highest of the French Pyrenean peaks. Elsewhere, visit the wide valley of Azun to reach the departure point for lots of highly scenic family hikes and walking tours.
