- Well-equipped family-friendly site on the river Lot, in the Aveyron
- Bateau l’Olt cruises 10 minutes’ drive; Figeac 35 minutes
- Dogs welcome; canoeing and wild swimming; pool; restaurant and bar
It’s likely that the folks behind Camping Pittoresque didn’t have to struggle to come up with a name for their site in south-western France; all they had to do was take a look at the splendid Aveyron countryside… et voilà: Camping Pittoresque was born.
The location certainly makes this site rather desirable: sitting on the west bank of the river Lot, among gentle hills, Pittoresque is about 35 minutes’ drive from the Aubrac Natural Regional Park and just a little farther from the Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park (45 minutes’ drive). Oh, and it sits right along a cycling route. And if walking and cycling are not your jams, alternative activities include fishing and canoeing in the Lot, climbing and cave explorations.
There’s wild swimming, too, of course. If you get a little jittery in natural bodies of water, you can swim laps in the on-site pool. Meanwhile, the kids have a play area, a games room with a dartboard and pool table, and (in high season) a lively programme of organised activities.
That all sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? Take things down a notch with a relaxed drink at the on-site bar or on the covered terrace, or a leisurely meal featuring local ingredients at the restaurant, which also runs themed evenings, such as pizza nights. If you want to do your own catering, the nearest supermarket is in the village of St-Parthem (10 minutes), which also has a couple of restaurants.
Dogs are welcome at the site, and there are canine-friendly walks in the vicinity.

Local attractions
Go west along the Lot to reach Bateau l’Olt (10 minutes’ drive), an electric boat that takes visitors on a tranquil river cruise, so you can admire the spectacular landscapes of this region from the water. Some cruises come with child-friendly themes, too, including pirates and puppet shows.
A coal- and steel-mining hub in the 19th century, Decazeville (15 minutes) has interesting displays at the Museum of Industrial and Mining Heritage. The former open-cast mine (La Découverte) has been given over to nature: climb up to the top for views of the lake and the lush surroundings.
Figeac (35 minutes) has a medieval town centre with pretty streets and squares lined with arcaded buildings. The Place des Ecritures features a monumental reproduction of the Rosetta Stone in honour of local lad Jean-François Champollion, who was the first to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics in the 1800s.
