  • Peaceful, family-friendly Aveyron site alongside a fishing pond
  • On the outskirts of Naucelle, half an hour's drive from Rodez
  • Miniature golf, play area, inflatable structure and volleyball on site
In need of a little relaxation, perhaps at a peaceful setting in the Aveyron region? Get your bags packed for Camping du Lac de Bonnefon, halfway between Rodez and Albi (and around half an hour's drive away from each). This lush, green base is set alongside a fish-filled pond where guests can fish for free and is set on the outskirts of the historic village of Naucelle, where amenities are within a 20-minute walk. Once you've pulled up and unpacked your bags, set your sights on a family dip at the heated aquatic area (open during high season only), where there are two pools, a Jacuzzi and a handful of water games. If the kids still have energy to burn off, strike up a game of miniature golf or volleyball, or take them along to the play area, inflatable structure, trampoline or fitness trails. That's not all that there is to do on site for the kids; every week, there's a free kids' club for ages five to 11, plus additional pétanque tournaments, themed evenings, concerts and family entertainment during peak season. A friendly snack bar is open during peak months, providing sustenance on top of the seasonal bread delivery service. Hosts Isabelle and Michel make sure the vibe on site is friendly and that the on-site amenities – laundry, equipment rentals and loos/showers – are kept safe and clean. Exploring the area around Camping du Lac de Bonnefon Ségala is also something to very much look forward to. The site is in Ségala, also known as the 'land of 100 valleys', so pretty villages, watersports centres and animal parks are all within driving distance.

Local attractions

The 13th-century fortified village of Sauveterre de Rouergue (15 minutes' drive) is famed for its handsome facades. Two more villages overlooking the Aveyron valley are within 45 kilometres of the site: the medieval village of Najac (45 minutes) with its 12th-century fortress, and the small village of Belcastel (half an hour), with its 11th-century castle restored by architect Fernand Pouillon in the 1970s. Within 40 kilometres are the cities of Rodez (25 minutes), with a Gothic cathedral and several museums, including the arty Museum Soulages, and Albi (35 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Sainte Cécile cathedral and the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec; boat trips across the Tarn can be arranged from Albi too. If it's châteaux you're after, see also the Château du Bosc (10 minutes), where artist Toulouse Lautrec spent many of his childhood summers, and if you're an architecture aficionado, puff along to the railway viaduct across the Viaur and to nearby Millau (an hour and 15 minutes) with its famed viaduct across the Tarn valley. (The town is also known for its luxury leather and gloves if you want to bring home le cadeaux, or make sure of un cadeau for yourself.)
