  • Well-maintained site in the foothills of the Montagne de Reims, Marne
  • Faux de Verzy nature reserve 10 minutes’ drive; Reims 25 minutes
  • Playground, pétanque and table tennis; on-site café and picnic tables
What would make a holiday in rural France a little bit more special? Perhaps staying close to a vineyard – that would be pretty sweet. And if you want to make it extra sweet (or extra brut, as the case may be…), how does staying close to the vineyards of Champagne sound? Now, that is a cause for celebration. You can pop the corks at Camping La Montagne de Reims, a green and impeccably maintained site on the eastern edges of the Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park, in the Marne region. There is no skiing at this mountain range, so leave your winter gear behind. What you will find, though, is row after row of grapevines, the juice of which finds its way into delicious Champagnes. Besides vineyards, nature hikes here take in spectacular woodland like the Faux de Verzy nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive), historic villages like Hautvillers (35 minutes) and scenic points like the Belvédère de Dom Pérignon (35 minutes). Hard-core ramblers might also want to have a go at a section of the 108-kilometre GR®142 path linking Verzenay (10 minutes) to Laon. When you need a break from hiking (and imbibing the locally produced fizz), the site has a number of chilled activities – from fishing in the nearby river Vesle, to table tennis and pétanque games. Parents can grab a bite to eat from the on-site café and sit at a picnic table in the shade while keeping an eye on the kids as they make new friends in the play area.

What customers say

Lovely spot with level pitches, shaded by trees. Free WiFi & friendly staff a bonus, close to Reims for biking. Downsides: toilets/showers often grubby & unstocked. Some felt security fencing & early check-outs were a drag, with website info not quite right.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked Free wifi was really great. Picturesque site.

Disliked Basic with no other amenities so you have to travel to nearest supermarket.
Disappointed that they couldn’t at least put toilet rolls in the toilet blocks. Limited shower and toilet facilities for the number of campers.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked The tap to fill up our bottles had good pressure
Toilets were clean

Disliked Description on website completely inaccurate!
Not amongst vineyards, no water nearby, no cafe or shop as advertised (one fridge in reception with a few drinks in).
Petanque area was poorly maintained.
3 toilets and showers for a large campsite was wildly insufficient, there was always a queue
They also closed bathroom for a long time whilst cleaning in the morning so I had to go out without a shower
No toilet roll, soap or hand-dryers in the toilet

OK for a night, but wouldn’t want to stay longer.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked The pitch we were on was a good size.

There are some beautiful, mature walnut trees opposite the reception area.

Disliked The site is surrounded by a high wire fence and has a big steel gate which is code locked when reception closes. This gives the aura of a military camp.

Pitches are to be vacated by 11am, which is early compared to most other sites.

The toilet block is woefully inadequate for the number of people crammed onto the site, and was closed for cleaning at 1030am when we needed to nip in before leaving. 3 toilets and 3 showers. In serious need of updating. No loo paper.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked Very basic campsite. Toilets, showers, sinks and a playground. The campsite is located next to the ZigZag Park, which is worth a visit if you have kids under 12. Its part water park, part outdoor softplay.

Disliked No toilet paper or hand soap was provided. I do prefer to have a few more facilities than this campsite offered, like a communal kitchen, fridge/freezer, washing machine.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked The location, the natural environment and the pitch

Disliked The toilet and shower block seemed too small for the size of campsite as often had to queue to use toilet
I think the supply of a little handsoap would be good to encourage hygiene
The showers were just a trickle

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked Campsite was quiet and in a village location, there were only 50 pitches. We could order bread and croissants every day. We cycled into Riems along the canal which was nice and flat going each way. Site staff were friendly and helpful.

Disliked Hot water wasn’t hot just tepid, separate toilets and showers for men and women but only 3 cubicles to cater for 100 people when the site was full which was when we were there. Wi fi on site bu only if you stood outside the reception.

Local attractions

The highlight of Reims (25 minutes’ drive) is the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that was the traditional coronation site of French kings. On the outskirts of the city, wineries such as Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin and Vranken Pommery have cavernous chalk cellars that can be visited. Champagne houses also dot the town of Épernay (35 minutes), where the 19th-century Château Perrier houses several interesting collections – from archaeology and geology, to Champagne wine. If your Champagne itch needs further scratching, Pressoria, in Aÿ, east of Épernay, is an interactive attraction where you can engage all your senses as you learn about this sparkling wine. Treat the kids to a day at Disneyland Paris (one hour and 20 minutes), where they can meet their favourite cartoon characters, such as Snow White, Aladdin and Buzz Lightyear; experience thrill rides inspired by adventurous heroes like Indiana Jones; and watch entertaining shows and parades.
