- Site with spectacular views over the bay of Douarnenez’s Kervel beach
- A 10-minute drive from Locronan and a 10-minute walk from the coast
- Surf school on the beach with lessons and paddleboard rental
Who needs to get sand in their shoes when they can take in such a stunning view of Douarnenez’s big bay from their cosy spot at Le Camping d'Ys? Mind you, when it’s just a 10-minute walk to Kervel beach, you might just want to risk those pesky grains seeping into your trainers…
It’s also worth the walk for sourcing snacks and drinks at the crêperie and bar down by the water’s edge or plonking yourself down to watch the kitesurfers, windsurfers and paragliders skim the sky. If you want to get in on the action, a surf school with lessons for all ages – plus paddleboard rental – is down here as well, and Kervel’s popular for bass fishing and scuba diving too. For sand yachting, set off for Sainte-Anne la Palud (five minutes’ drive).
When wanders are on the itinerary, the GR34 long-distance hiking trail, wending its way along more than 1,800 kilometres' worth of the gorgeous Brittany coastline, runs close to Kervel. The site’s also a stellar starting point for exploring further on in Finistère as it's set between the Cap de la Chèvre and Pointe du Raz and is a 15-minute drive from the ports of Douarnenez.
When you return to the park after tiring days, it’ll be safe in the knowledge you can lie in your hammock and admire the views of the bay in the peace and quiet – this low-key spot doesn’t organise entertainment to make sure the environment’s kept as serene as possible.

Local attractions
If you’re here between the end of April and the beginning of May, don’t miss the sailing spectacle of the Grand Prix Guyader down on Kervel beach. Not visiting during this season? No problem – there’s still plenty to do hereabouts. Kick things off in Locronan (10 minutes’ drive) with a stroll around the pretty stone houses flanked by manicured gardens before heading into the historical capital of the region, Quimper (25 minutes), and comparing them with the half-timbered homes here.
Drop by the twin-spired gothic cathedral too then have a nosey around the Breton County Museum’s archaeological artefacts and old-school costumes. For a masterclass on the area’s maritime past, visit Douarnenez’s four harbours and have a gander at the Port-Rhu sea-themed museum’s five ancient vessels.
Other ways to while the day away down at the coast includes making for the seaside resort of Morgat (35 minutes), scenically set between two rocky outcrops, and then venturing further on to the Cap de la Chèvre (50 minutes) to feel like you’re on the edge of the world…
