  • Peaceful site on a farm 35 minutes’ drive from Caen, in Normandy
  • Bayeux 25 minutes’ drive; Omaha Beach 40 minutes
  • Dogs are welcome; playground and board games; communal living room
With its assortment of colourful accommodations (Moroccan tents, Mongolian yurts and tipis), Au Bonheur Nomade truly is a splendid tribute to nomadic happiness (as the name implies). The site occupies two hectares of land on a traditional farm just off the D173 road, in a splendidly rural part of Normandy, surrounded by woodland and fields. Owners Lilli and Michel have built the site following sustainable, eco-friendly principles, using recycled materials wherever possible. They encourage a similar ethos from their guests with recycling points and a composting toilet (though there is also a toilet block with showers). There are also dedicated quiet areas around the site where guests can ground themselves, meditate or practise their asanas. Little guests are not forgotten either, with a playground including table tennis, table football and a basketball hoop. If rain forces everyone inside, there is a selection of board games. But most of all, the kids might enjoy getting to meet the resident pony, goats and sheep. By the way, well-behaved dogs are welcome here, but please keep them on a lead while on site. All units are equipped so you can cook your own meals, and there is also a communal barbecue area. After meeting fellow guests by the grill, you can relocate for a nightcap in the Moroccan-inspired living room or the covered lounge. If you want to sample regional specialities, there are plenty of restaurants in the surrounding area, including brasseries and crêperies in Villers-Bocage (10 minutes’ drive), where there are also grocery stores and supermarkets.

Local attractions

The Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux (25 minutes’ drive) displays the famed tapestry, embroidered with the military exploits of William the Conqueror across the Channel in 1066 and the Battle of Hastings. Also in town is the Museum of the Battle of Normandy, with exhibits on D-Day. When in Caen (35 minutes), check out the imposing 11th-century Abbaye-aux-Hommes, where William the Conqueror (him again…) is buried. Exhibits at the Mémorial de Caen, on the outskirts of town, focus on World War II and the Cold War. At Omaha Beach (40 minutes) children can fly kites, build sandcastles and paddle in the shallow waters. They can also learn a thing or two about history, with the Omaha Beach Memorial and the nearby Normandy American Cemetery illustrating the events that took place on this sandy stretch during World War II.
