  • Hot tub, swimming pool and a Nordic barbecue hut; breakfast included
When romance is in the air, you’ll be wanting to get far away from prying eyes and madding crowds – and that’s where adults-only Le Bois de la Pause, five minutes’ drive from the sleepy hamlet of Saint-Cybranet in the Dordogne, comes in. Here you can stay in a luxury wooden lodge surrounded by mature trees and – best of all – with its own private hot tub just waiting to soak away the aches and pains of everyday life. The spacious lodge interior is laid out with a cosy bedroom that’s full of thoughtful touches like mirrors, bedside lamps, dressing gowns and slippers, while the open-plan living space has comfy armchairs, a dining table just big enough for two, and an exclusive-use hot tub. There’s also a smartly decked out tiled ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower. Moving outside, the covered decking has a table and chairs for eating in total privacy. A heated swimming pool in the walnut grove is open for use between May and the end of September, and a Nordic kota (a Sami barbecue hut), with a spa bath and grill, can be hired for private use. And just so you can chill out without having to worry about cooking, the site owners deliver a daily continental breakfast discreetly to your door. You can also book in advance for other meals once on site.

Local attractions

You may well just want to hang out on site with your beloved, but should you wish to explore the Dordogne, there’s a lot to see and do. Spectacular La Roque-Gageac (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start, with its red-roofed cottages sitting on the riverbank and the mighty château backed by steep cliffs. Beynac-et-Cazenac (15 minutes) is another gorgeous village where you can paddle down the Dordogne River or climb flower-lined alleys up to the Château de Beynac on its rocky promontory. From this medieval eyrie, you will spot the landmark Périgord Noir castles at Castelnaud-Fayrac and Lacoste (both 10 minutes). If you’re keen to escape the visitor crowds, head for the Céou Valley (25 minutes), where you can cycle through peaceful woodland on the V91 bike route, swim in the Céou River or have a potter around sandstone houses in the historic village of Daglan (10 minutes).
