A protected area since the early 1960s, Chobe National Park is home to large herds of elephants, buffalo and lions, plus crocodiles and hippos. Oh, not forgetting the astonishing range of birdlife (several hundred species), from kingfishers and fish eagles, to storks and herons. Named after Scottish explorer Dr David Livingstone, Livingstone (one hour and five minutes’ drive), in neighbouring Zambia, is home to a museum with ethnographic and natural history exhibits. On the outskirts of the town is the Livingstone Crocodile Park, where it is possible to handle baby crocs and snakes. You might hear the thunderous roar and see the watery spray of Victoria Falls (one and a half hours) long before you reach the site, such is the power of this waterfall on the Zambezi River. There are several viewpoints around the falls, which are almost two kilometres wide, with a dramatic drop of about 100 metres.
