- Luxurious lakeside bubble domes in De Hoge Dijken Nature Reserve
- Half an hour’s drive to Bruges; Ostend 25 minutes; Ypres 55 minutes
- Dark-skies glampsite with outdoor kitchens, a Jacuzzi and zen garden
Whether you’re overnighting before catching a ferry from Ostend (25 minutes’ drive) or lingering a while to discover the secrets of intriguing Bruges (half an hour), you should certainly be able to relax at Glamping Universe. Tucked into lakeside gardens on De Hoge Dijken Nature Reserve, this leafy and peaceful site is home to just a few cool, stylish and transparent bubble domes, all with their own private alfresco seating areas.
The site is aptly named too, as all you have to do – on clear nights of course – is lie back and watch a universe-worth of galaxies glittering through your transparent bubble. Chances are you may get to see shooting stars too…
Beds are made up with quality linens for your arrival, and each powered and fully ventilated bubble has a private shower room in the bathhouse. On lazy days, soak in the Jacuzzi, hang out in the peaceful zen garden or borrow books from the library, and if you’re up for some sporting action, play pétanque, badminton or cricket.
Cooking is done in one of two outdoor kitchens, with induction hobs, fridge-freezers and all necessary utensils to hand – no need to do the washing up though, as that’s taken care of as part of the service.
There’s a communal barbecue (open fires are not allowed) – and you can have a go at catching your supper in the lake (permit required). However, if you’d rather take a rest from catering, a breakfast service is available on site, as well as an all-day menu of snacks and cocktails.

Local attractions
You can fill days in medieval Bruges (half an hour’s drive), but if you have limited time, head for the exquisite Basilica of the Holy Blood to admire its spectacularly colourful interior, take a cruise around the canals, and clamber up 366 steps to the top of the belfry for stunning views over the city rooftops.
As well as touring the formal Leopoldpark gardens and the ornate cathedral in Ostend (25 minutes), you can languish on the vast expanse of sandy beach (catch the Sand Sculpture Festival from late June to the end of September) and follow an interactive trail around 1809’s Fort Napoleon.
For more history, make for Ypres (55 minutes) to learn about the atrocities of World War I at the interactive In Flanders Fields Museum, before attending the daily Last Post Ceremony at the marble Menin Gate. Step back further in time at the former Roman outpost of Oudenburg (five minutes), where exhibits in the Roman Archaeological Museum include armour fragments and skeletons excavated nearby.
