If you’re in the mood for outdoor activities, you can start by taking a short bike ride or walk (five minutes/20 minutes respectively) to 'T Fort Koningshooikt, for some fishing or an Airsoft adventure. For something a little gentler, there’s a beach and swimming pond at De Nekker recreation centre (15 minutes’ drive) or boating, kayaking and paddleboarding on the Binnen-Nete in Lier (10 minutes). The lovely city of Antwerp (40 minutes) is well worth a visit, to visit the zoo, explore the Rubens House and perhaps sample a local beer or two. The ornate facades of Brussels’ Grand Place and Royal Palace are about 40 minutes away as well. Closer to home, Mechelen (20 minutes) has a zoo, the Technopolis science museum and a good collection of interesting buildings, including colourful houses and a cathedral where you can climb the tower for excellent views.
