  • Family holiday park five minutes’ walk from Dinas Dinlle beach
  • Eryri National Park and Caernarfon Castle both 10 minutes’ drive
  • Heated outdoor pool, clubhouse, play area and gym; dogs welcome
When you can’t decide whether you want a seaside holiday or an outdoor-adventure experience, make a beeline for Dinlle Caravan Park, sandwiched neatly between the beaches of the scenic north-west Wales coast and the peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park (10 minutes’ drive). And if you’ve got a keen history fan in your party, this well-maintained site has got them covered too, since it’s only 10 minutes by car from mighty Caernarfon Castle. If your dream is to leave the car untouched and simply slop around on site for a few days, this caravan park has plenty to keep you from getting restless. You can hone your fitness regime in the gym and take refreshing dips in the outdoor pool. Elsewhere, challenge the kids to darts in the games room, or go sea fishing off Dinas Dinlle beach (five minutes’ stroll), where there are also facilities for dinghy and kayak hire. And if you need a pick-me-up at the end of an active day, head for the clubhouse bar for a spot of night-time socialising. Dogs are more than welcome at this quiet, manicured site planted with wildflowers; you can exercise them on the beach (please note that there are some signposted restrictions in the summer months), or take them on long hikes in the national park.

Local attractions

Rescue helicopters and vintage fighter planes such as a Hawker Hunter are among the exhibits at the Airworld Aviation Museum (five minutes’ drive), which occupies a former Royal Air Force station. Beware: allowing the kids to sit in the cockpits might start a lifelong passion for flying in them. Along with several other Welsh fortresses built by Edward I in the late 13th century, Caernarfon Castle (10 minutes), at the mouth of the River Seiont, is a UNESCO-listed site. Apart from the well-preserved defensive walls and towers, not much remains of this castle where King Charles III was made Prince of Wales in 1969. Attractions on the Isle of Anglesey (25 minutes) include beaches such as Llanddona, a popular spot for windsurfing; the Pili Palas Nature World, which is home to creepy-crawlies, butterflies and meerkats; and National Trust - Plas Newydd House and Gardens, with a vast area of woodland populated by red squirrels.
