  • Family-run Mid Wales farm site and wildlife haven just off the A44
  • Llandrindod Wells 10 minutes’ drive; Hay-on-Wye 40 minutes
  • Local pub with beer garden accessed from the back of the site
Stopping over for a night, or in need of a base for a longer break meandering around Mid Wales? Either way, there’s a warm welcome at Dolswydd Caravan Park, in a handy spot just off the A44, 10 minutes’ drive from Llandrindod Wells. This family-run site is on the edge of a traditional working farm with a backdrop of open common land and the splendid Welsh hills behind. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s something of a wildlife haven, with regular visitors including red kites, otters, woodpeckers and hares, as well as the swans who stop by daily. Getting out and about in the local countryside is a cinch from here – walkers can hit major trails like Glyndŵr’s Way and the Offa’s Dyke Path (the visitor’s centre for the latter is in Knighton, a 20-minute drive away), or find quiet local lanes to wander along. Golf, horse riding, canoeing, archery and climbing are among the other activities available nearby, and there’s fishing next door to the site on the River Ithon. Modern facilities on site include bathrooms with toilets and showers, plus a launderette. A short (500-metre) walk away through the back of the site is the local pub, which serves good home-cooked food and has a lovely riverside beer garden.

Peaceful, great value site. Clean facilities, friendly owners, lovely riverside walks. Adjacent pub popular. Some found facilities dated; a few showers. Management aware of accessibility needs.

Lovely to be on a working farm.
Lovely host

Disliked Pitch 32 as you are in the heart of nature and this is no reflection on the site.
Just be careful of the mice as they chewed a hole in our tent. Easier to go closer to the pitch 33 sign.
Wouldn't want any harm to come to them at the end of the day we are pitching onto of their home.

From the manager: Thank you for visiting us and for taking the time to leave a review—we are genuinely pleased to hear you had an enjoyable stay.

That said, we must admit to a touch of disappointment that the points listed under “dislikes” weren’t mentioned to us during your visit. We would have been more than happy to assist, including helping you move to another pitch. While pitch 33 doesn’t have an electric hook-up, we certainly wouldn’t have minded you relocating nearby had we known—especially as you had the entire area to yourselves.

We also appreciate you noting the presence of field mice nesting in the area—what a lovely bit of nature to encounter. We’ll make sure their little home is safely cordoned off so they come to no harm. That said, it would have been very helpful to know at the time so we could have ensured no one else set up in that spot.

Thank you again for your feedback—we do value it, even if we’d have preferred the opportunity to address things while you were still with us.

Liked Great value for money.
Great food and the pub less than 10 min walk away

Disliked Only one shower
Nothing else nearby in the village except from the pub

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for visiting. It is a shame there are no services in the village. Years ago, Penybont had a post office and shop as well as blacksmiths, livestock auction and even a Midland bank. Crossgates is only 2 miles away and has a shop at the garage, which are listed on the website and also in the information that we email out to everyone before they arrive.
We are pleased you enjoyed your stay.

A perfect site if you want a peaceful getaway So quiet and relaxing.

Liked Great spacious pitch near the toilet block. We had pitch 7. Lovely touch of a picnic bench on the pitch . What a lovely little site. Local pub/hotel 2 minute walk away. Dog field over a little bridge. Will definitely return. Friendly owners.

Disliked Only thing that wasn't ideal was one shower which didn't have the best pressure but a minor thing in a lovely site.

From the manager: Thanks for visiting. We have a plumber coming to look at the pressure. Thank you for making us aware of this.

Powered grass site

Liked Our 3rd visit overall but 1st in our tourer.
Pitched on the small grass field with electric and water available close by (pitch 35).
We love the relaxing, quiet feel of this site. Time to just switch off and forget about the outside world for a while.
The field was very wet due to recent weather and we did have trouble getting traction to reverse on to the pitch. The owner was down to us in 5 minutes in a very capable off road buggy and placed the caravan perfectly on the pitch for us.
The weather improved significantly during our stay so we sent a quick message to Rachel and an extra night was booked.

This site is definitely our 'go to' quick booking for a few days away and we'll be back a few times during the year.

Disliked Nothing to dislike, we love it here.

Liked Beautiful surroundings, facilities were lovely, including fresh flowers in the cubicles and the water was lovely and hot.
Also, owners were very accommodating and let me change pitch as wasn’t sure my EHU would reach.

Local attractions

On the outskirts of Rhayader, the Red Kite Feeding Station - Gigrin Farm (20 minutes’ drive) features several hides (including one 10 metres above the ground, for great aerial photography) from where you can gaze in awe at the spectacle of hundreds of red kites swooping on a feeding field to catch juicy meat morsels. Check out the lush displays of azaleas and maple trees at Hergest Croft Gardens (20 minutes), where you can also take a stroll through a colourful orchard and among giant rhododendrons. Afterwards, drive a little farther to the Small Breeds Farm Park (25 minutes), which is home to rabbits and guinea pigs, plus exotic birds like kookaburras. Hay-on-Wye (40 minutes) is renowned globally for its literary festival, which takes place in late spring. However, at any other time of year, you can still soak up the literary vibe by visiting the town’s many bookshops. If you happen to be in Hay on a Thursday, the weekly market is a top place to stock up on local produce.
