Located halfway up Ben Dorrery, this elevated campsite has far-reaching views, and on clear days you can see for at least 25 miles – now that'll give you something to daydream about…
This large camping field is remote, peaceful and very quiet, with no traffic noise or aircraft noise in the surrounding area (with just the occasional fly-past from the RAF). The field is on the edge of a woodland where you can explore the forest floor, and dogs are allowed as long as you follow the site owner's instructions and keep them on a lead at all times – this is sheep country, after all.
If there are any keen anglers in your party, the edge of Loch Calder is about a mile and a half down the road, while to stock up on supplies you're a 10-minute drive from Halkirk's small supermarket and 15 minutes from Thurso's wider range of shops and restaurants. Alternatively, you could stick around on site, where home-cooked breakfast and evening meals are available on request.

Local attractions
Fishing in nearby Loch Calder (five minutes' drive) is popular with anglers, and there's also the possibility of fishing in Loch Watten (20 minutes) or salmon fishing in the Thurso river (from 10 minutes), subject to the right permits being in place beforehand. There is also birdwatching here all year round, with areas like Puffin Cove (35 minutes) and RSPB Dunnet Head (45 minutes) both very popular options.
There are excellent beaches to visit around Thurso (15 minutes), the northernmost town on the British mainland, and you're also within easy driving distance of John o' Groats (40 minutes). The busy port of Scrabster (20 minutes) is close by too, with the ferry crossing over to Stromness on Orkney taking roughly an hour and a half.
If you're partial to a tipple, the site owners recommend the Pulteney Distillery in Wick (35 minutes), another scenic town where there are sandy beaches, two historic castles and boat trips that can take you out into the wilds of the North Sea.
