  • Adults-only bell tent on a farm a five-minute drive to Wick, Caithness
  • Loch of Yarrows five minutes’ drive; John O’ Groats half an hour
  • Bed with Tempur mattress; cooking stove; pub within walking distance
Take a remote farm in Caithness, a spectacularly wild region in the north-easternmost corner of mainland Scotland; add a bell tent – and voilà: you get Secret Glamping Caithness, an adults-only site where you can truly get away from everything (and most everybody, bar the occasional sheep). You and your significant other will be the only guests on site, sharing a five-metre tent on a low hill with gorgeous views of the countryside – and privileged sunset vistas, too. By the way, Caithness is so far north, the sun sets well after 10pm in the summer, making it a pleasure to linger outside your accommodation with a glass of wine, or to take a leisurely stroll to the local pub, which is just over half a mile away (15 minutes’ walk along the A99), for a pint and a home-cooked meal. For more dining options, head to the town of Wick (five minutes’ drive), where there are also supermarkets and shops for your grilling provisions (the site has a barbecue area and a picnic table). And what of the tent? Well, they don’t call it ‘glamping’ for nothing: lined with hand-woven rugs, your quarters come with a double bed with a Tempur mattress (bed linen and towels are provided, as is a selection of books if you struggle to fall asleep), a settee and reclining chairs with footstools, plus a cooking stove with a complimentary bag of sticks (additional fuel can be purchased on site). Solar lights around the grounds show you the way to the toilet tent.

Local attractions

The coastal town of Wick is well worth a day trip. Start with a visit to the Wick Heritage Museum, then walk around the harbour area to the North Baths, where the brave can take a dip. End the day at the Old Pulteney Distillery to sample its range of single-malt whiskies. The area around Loch of Yarrows (five minutes’ drive) is dotted with remains of ancient settlements, brochs (Iron Age structures) and burial mounds. The Yarrows Archaeological Trail takes them all in. If you’re not into archaeology, the loch is also a popular spot for trout fishing. John O’ Groats (half an hour) is a small village with a big reputation, being the most distant point on the British mainland from Land’s End. Take a picture next to the iconic signpost, then walk the 45 minutes to the Duncansby Head Lighthouse, taking in far-reaching coastal views.
