Liked Camped with the kids and dogs for 2 nights, really nice site, good facilities in the camping area, toilets decent, showers etc. The main area where the shop and various eateries are was genuinely surprisingly good. Would definitely recommend and will absolutely go again.

Disliked Got a touch busy on the Saturday but really not much to complain about

What customers say

Campers love the tidy grounds, facilities, and friendly crew. Great food and service at the bar/eatery. Spacious spots and stunning views are a bonus. Most want to return, though some noted noise, loo hygiene, and facility waits when busy. New play area looks promising!

Unpowered grass tent site (six person)

Liked This was our second stay at Lilliardsedge. Our first visit was a 10/10 experience, which is why we chose to return, this time with both of our young children.

The site itself remains very well maintained, with clean grounds and good toilet and shower facilities. On virtually every visit they were in good order. The restaurant was also very good, with friendly staff and great food.

Disliked The biggest disappointment was that the children’s play park was closed while it was being rebuilt. It’s great to see the site investing in improving the facilities, especially as the previous play area was already very good, but this was one of the main reasons we chose to return. Unfortunately, there was no mention of the closure when booking or in the confirmation email. Had we known in advance, we could have decided whether to keep the booking or forfeit the small deposit and choose another site. Instead, we only found out on arrival, which was particularly difficult as our children don’t cope well with unexpected changes. It really affected the first evening and following morning.

One of the showers appeared to be out of order, although there wasn’t any sign to say so. I only discovered this once I was changed and ready to use it, meaning I had to move to another cubicle. Thankfully another shower was available.

The washing-up area could also be improved. Some form of canopy or shelter would make a big difference, as I ended up washing pots in the rain before we left. There was also no hot, or even warm, water available here the entire weekend, so I had to fetch warm water from the bathroom.

Liked The staff are very friendly and the place is lovely and clean.

Disliked They had stopped the use of the putting green for visitors, only golfers were allowed to use it. The park was still under construction.
There was no water in the toilets on Saturday night for flushing or hand washing, this was reported on Sunday around 1pm when I also reported that there was a lot of water on the floor in the ladies bathroom floor which was dangerous and to be honest looked a bit dirty. We ended up having to leave the campsite on the Sunday around 5.30pm due to the extremely high winds and it was still there, not dealt with which i found was a little disappointing and it was dangerous due to it being a slip hazard, never mind the colour.

Local attractions

Think of Scotland and you likely think of (among other things) castles, whiskey and golf. The latter is nicely provided on site, but there can never be too much of a good thing... Perfect that swing on a handful of courses within easy reach, including one in the village of St Boswells, 10 minutes’ drive from the site. This part of the country should also satisfy even the most ardent castle fans too (as long as they remember to check opening dates): the 16th-century Ferniehirst is 15 minutes away; Scotland’s largest inhabited Castle, Floors, is 25 minutes from base; and the former love nest of Mary Queen of Scots and the fourth Earl of Bothwell, Hermitage Castle, is reachable in less than an hour. Those keen to stay in the past should have a poke around the ruins of Melrose and Jedburgh abbeys, both within 20 minutes, or stick to statelier affairs at Abbotsford and Monteviot within the same radius. Active types might prefer to opt for wanders around Harestanes (10 minutes) or swing through the trees at Go Ape Peebles and pedal down precipitous slopes at the 7stanes trails at Glentress, both 50 minutes away. Gin quaffers will want to pour themselves over to the Born in the Borders visitor centre 25 minutes from base but, when it comes to the uisge beatha (that’s the water of life, or whisky for all the non-Gaelic speakers), a trip to Edinburgh comes highly recommended for tours of the whisky museum (plus more museums, castles and shops, of course).
