What’s it to be – Edinburgh or Glasgow? Book a stay at North Lodge Glamping, five minutes’ drive from Carnwath in Lanarkshire, and you’ll have no such quandaries, as the site is pretty much mid-distance between Scotland’s two liveliest cities. Visit one or visit them both, you’re guaranteed scenic drives in the Pentland Hills to Edinburgh, and through pretty Lanarkshire countryside to Glasgow. Once on site, all is calm and peaceful, and thoughts of city days out will fade from your mind as you relax in woodland surroundings on a smallholding with chickens, sheep and friendly pet cats. In the morning, you may be woken up by the roosters – and that means that fresh hen’s eggs are available to buy daily for breakfast. A communal barbecue, firepit and outdoor eating area make it a breeze for you to eat alfresco, but if you’re not a fan of cooking outdoors, there are pubs and restaurants in Lanark and Biggar (both 15 minutes’ drive). Local takeaways will also deliver straight to your tent. You can easily keep everyone occupied without stirring too far… kids have a spacious play park to run around in, and there are numerous quiet walking and cycling routes accessed directly from the site. You can also relax away any woes in the hot tub – wait for a clear night and watch a myriad of stars dancing above as you soak.

Local attractions

Major days out to Edinburgh (45 minutes’ drive) and Glasgow (50 minutes) are a cinch, but there’s no need to travel that far. Make a beeline for the UNESCO-listed industrial heritage site at New Lanark (20 minutes), where you can tour former cotton mills and take walks along the River Clyde. If you have kids in tow, next stop might be Clyde Valley Family Park (25 minutes), popular for its mini-train rides, crazy golf and animal encounters. There are some quite niche cultural activities in these parts too: Little Sparta (15 minutes) is home of an art walk celebrating the work of sculptor/poet/gardener Ian Hamilton Finlay. The market town of Biggar (15 minutes’) is a lively spot with lots of pubs but also has the Victorian-era Purves Puppets, a theatre with a café and shop selling puppets attached. If you fancy a spot of shopping, the pleasant market town of Peebles (half an hour) has a decent selection of shops selling quality Scottish memorabilia; otherwise head for Livingston Designer Outlet (20 minutes), where you can unearth discount labels and treat the kids to world cuisine in the food outlets.
