  • Spacious family- and pet-friendly park with a country park feel
  • Private sandy beach on site; a 15-minute drive from Kirkcudbright
  • Indoor pool, café, lounge bar, amusement room and 18-hole golf course
If the kids say they’re bored at Brighouse Bay Holiday Park at Kirkcudbright on the Dumfries and Galloway coast, you might want to send them home. Sublime Irish Sea views, heaps of on-site activities, three ponds, a private beach and countryside walks are all yours for the taking. It's pretty spectacular by night too, as the setting in Galloway's dark-skies region means the stargazing here is stellar: the subdued lighting on site enhances it all the more. Pretty much everything you could want is on site or close by: if golf on the 9/18 course at Brighouse Bay Golf course doesn’t float your boat, wander along the coast (camera in hand) or follow the signposted hikes through the local woodland. Other stunning options include launching a kayak from the bay’s all-tide slipway or taking in the views with a drink from the on-site lounge bar… If the weather should be less than co-operative, stay undercover in the park’s Jacuzzi and indoor pool (available for an additional fee). There's a separate splash area for toddlers or the indoor amusement room. Also on site – yes, there’s more – the well-stocked shop keeps guests sorted for essentials and the café serves hot and cold meals and snacks to eat there or in the family lounge bar. Make a visit to reception your first stop, where staff can offer suggestions on what to do and see while you stock up on leaflets, maps and gifts. Wardens are on site if you need any pointers during your stay. On-site amenities include two shower blocks with ensuite cubicles for families, plus separate ladies and gents' sections in the larger block. Dishwashing and laundry facilities are also available.

Liked: The first toilet block was clean with decent showers.

Disliked: Staff in the shop were very rude. Two sisters I believe. Not friendly with my two small, smiley, happy children just grateful to be there, their attitude was not welcoming and made me feel uncomfortable.
Park is OK.
Toilet block opposite very dirty.
My pitch was on top of tree roots making it difficult to pitch my tent and uneven making for an uncomfortable stay to which I left a day early.
Can't blame the site for my neighbours but I believe staff should frequent trips around to keep an eye on things, the family next to me were loud and inconsiderate, allowing their children to use my own children's equipment without asking and their dog crying and barking all day.

From the manager: I am sorry that your stay was disappointing for you. If you had let us know that your pitch was not suitable, we could have moved you to another pitch.
Our toilets and showers are cleaned regularly by our dedicated staff, but they cant be there 24 hours a day.
Our staff in the shop are always friendly and welcoming, so I am surprised to hear that you thought they weren't.
We recommend that any of our customers who have a problem whilst staying on our park, come to reception to let us know, then we can try to solve them.

Liked: Peaceful family friendly atmosphere.. really good and clean facilities. Liked that there was no signal for phones meant could really escape the world. Playground for kids to be entertained was good. Well stocked shop. Friendly and helpful staff. Pool was good. Beautiful scenery. Ground was well kept and easy to put tend up. Handles the heavy rain we'll. Easy to book and cater for our needs to pitch close together and to facilities and play area. Meant we could see and hear them but could llrt them play too.

Disliked: Pool got a bit busy at times and changing facilities a bit noisy and disorganised. Quite slow food service and menu options inconsistent. Not much in the way of clubhouse entertainment sos didn't spend hardly any time or money in there. Games room was quite poor for things to do... weather was awful but can't hold that against you

Liked: Lots of space - well marked out pitches. Very well Maintained. Good shower blocks and other facilities. Lovely woodland walk to the beach. Golf course looked good but didn’t play. Swimming pool on site, but we didn’t use it.
Great kids play park.
Felt very safe and all other campers very friendly.

Disliked: The cafe bar which is situated in the club house didn’t open until 1200hrs. Which means you can’t get a breakfast there. Opens at 12 and you can’t get take away pizza etc. but missing a trick with no breakfasts. There maybe other options on site, but we didn’t know about them if there was

Not a dislike, just to be aware. There is no phone signal. And no wifi. There is wifi in the club house I believe should you venture up there. But in some ways; keeping the kids and myself off my phone was a good thing! But if you rely on signal for business - you won’t get any!

Liked: Cleanliness of the toilets and showers, well done to the gentleman involved.
Very spacious pitches.
Grassy areas well maintained.
Good access to walks and beach.

Disliked: WIFI erratic and has to be paid for separately. In this day and age the cost should be included and the service should be better. If they can do it in the Scottish Highlands, why not here?
Many areas are very scruffy and need tidied up.
Too far from local services, particularly since the bridge into Kirkcudbright was closed.

Liked: The overall location of the site is tremendous with beautiful views. A short walk to sandy bay with stunning views. The overall view of the camp site is very well kept and all the workers and stuff on the site are very friendly and welcoming when you come to reception a pitch up. And the prices of food and shopping, we’re not too high considering the location.

Disliked: They draw back is the bar area and cafeteria don’t open until 12pm. So if you want have cooked breakfast in the cafeteria its more of lunch. But not to dramatic.

Local attractions

Dumfries and Galloway is packed with pursuits for all ages and interests – and it must be pointed out here that the ice cream and nature trails of the Cream O’Galloway ice cream factory are a mere 15 minutes' drive away… Also nearby is The Cocoabean Company (15 minutes' drive) at Kirkcudbright, which has interactive children’s workshops and a chocolate shop (hurrah) alongside well-equipped and roomy indoor and outdoor play areas. While in town, kick around in the grounds of 16th-century MacLellan's Castle (15 minutes) in the centre of Kirkcudbright, and have a look at Broughton House & Garden (15 minutes), former home of one of the Glasgow Boys EA Hormel and housing a huge collection of works by Robert Burns (painter, not poet Rabbie). At Gatehouse of Fleet (20 minutes), about nine miles to the north-west from Kirkcudbright, the Mill on the Fleet art gallery holds regular exhibitions and events like literary launches and talks. Follow up a morning here with an afternoon at 15th-century Cardoness Castle (20 minutes) or around the thousands of species blooming around at Cally Gardens (20 minutes). And a few more gems that must be seen on a Dumfries and Galloway holiday: a boat trip to the Gem Rock Museum (35 minutes) at Creetown, filled with fossils, rocks, minerals and gemstones, and a stargazing trip to Galloway Forest Park (40 minutes), the first designated Dark Sky Park in the UK.
