  • Family-friendly site with a relaxed atmosphere on 100 acres of land
  • In the Mendip Hills, a five-minute bike ride from Thatchers Cider farm
  • Firepits and campfires encouraged; café-bar and outdoor activities
Fancy having the freedom to explore ancient woodland by day and settle in next to an open fire by night (but with the added bonus of hot showers and flushing loos)? Make Mendip Basecamp Adventure Campsite your next spot for a getaway, and all of the above shall be at your fingertips. This hidden site has an off-grid feel and it's a top choice for folk who like to keep moving: it’s got an outdoor activity centre a five-minute walk away with rock climbing, caving, skiing, tobogganing, frisbee golf, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting, bushcraft and axe throwing on offer (for an extra fee). All this, plus 100 acres of land on site, means outdoor playtimes, family ball games, or just chilling out with a book on the grass are possible. That said, a leisure centre with a gym and indoor pool is under five minutes’ drive away if you're in need of indoor activities. Back at base, food and drinks are on hand at the café-bar, which serves up barista coffee, breakfast rolls, pizza and fries. The on-site shop is stocked with all sorts, from local burgers and cheese to beer, cider, ice cream and cold drinks. Plus, a 24-hour garage and well-stocked shop are 10 minutes away by car for those who need to sort out any additional food. A quick heads up if you’re planning on staying at the site: your tent or campervan needs to be under 2.7 metres high, and no caravans or motorhomes are permitted because of access restrictions. Basecamp is accessed via a rural track, which is driven at guests' own risk.

What customers say

Big, friendly park with heaps for kids and families. Guests loved the roomy spots, tidy facilities, and super helpful staff. Good kai, fire pit hire a bonus. Some found the ground tough, noise an issue, and activities/shop a bit pricey. Managers are sorting out shower fixes.

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked Really big camp. Lots of nice walks and clean and friendly. Campers were respectful most of time. Food was good delicious hot pizza all freshly cooked. Indoor area was good.

Disliked Ball games played directly at my tent. Several times when I was cooking outside ball hit towards me. Hit my car and tent etc. Ground was extremely dry and hard wasn't prepared for this. Showers were slippery no dry space to get changed. Could have done with a park maybe. Ants were a bit of a problem.

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked Very family friendly, great sandpit for kids, lovely woodland walk where you can watch the sun set from. We liked that there wasn't much (or maybe any) campsite lighting at night as it meant you could clearly see the stars! Great to be able to hire fire pits too.

Disliked Cafe seating area was really dirty - the floor, seat cushions, and tables. We always like to have a drink in campsite cafes and sit and play card games but unfortunately did not enjoy this here with it being so dirty, and it put me off an otherwise lovely site.

Minor point but need more sinks by the toilets in area 3. Also would be good if the site tells you in advance that the ground is rocky in places so you'll need to bring a heavy mallet and strong tent pegs - not the usual types.

From the manager: Thanks for the taking the time to leave your feedback! We’re so pleased that you had a great time, and enjoyed the family-friendly feel.

We’re disappointed that the café area let things down. Your comments are really helpful - we’ll make sure they’re passed on. The tips about facilities and pitching are appreciated too, as they help us keep improving the experience for future campers.

Liked Stayed just the one peaceful chilled night. Quiet, friendly campsite. Lots of activities a short walk through the forest. Whilst there was a bar at the activity centre it wasnt open in the evening.

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked The site itself is really nice, good views and the festival feel adds to the experience.
Being able to hire a fireplace was good and the Saturday night music was a bonus.
Liked the fact you could pitch where you wanted instead of marked pitches.
Very dog friendly and friendly staff.

Disliked Being honest with my review I appreciate that I stayed on a bank holiday weekend however I feel that needs to be taken into account with regards to staffing levels.

It took 20 mins stood in a queue just to be checked in. No specific queue for this so at one point there were 3 lines of people waiting with food, drinks ect and others checking in with one person trying to man this whilst one other served ice cream.
The following day I went to purchase something from the shop saw the queue and decided based on the day before not to bother waiting as again it was being manned by one person who was also doing ice creams. The staff were very friendly though and were doing their best in the circumstances.
There are not really enough toilets and there we always queues for these and they are quite far from the camping areas unless you pitch closer to them, which we didn't have as an option
There was also lots of small bits of rubbish left in the grass where we had to pitch up before we put our tent up and not much options for pitching as the site was very full.

I would go again but never on a bank holiday.

From the manager: We're pleased to hear that you enjoyed the site, and your stay overall. We appreciate your honest feedback about queues, facilities, and cleanliness during a busy bank holiday. Your feedback is really valuable, and will help us continue to improve experiences, especially at peak times.

Disliked No dislikes, I loved my one night stay.

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked Toilets and pitch size, variety of activites

Disliked Lots of litter. Did a litter pick for half an edge of pitch 2 and filled a carrier bag! Showers too far from pitch 2 & often dirty with no drainage for overflowing water coming from shower tray. Prices of convenience shop extortionate. £3.99 for 6 hot dog rolls for one example! Charges of £4 per person for a nature trail which was self led and poorly signed at some points was a complete rip off. £4 per family would have sufficed, if even that, but £16 for a family of 4 was unnecessary. Would come back but be wiser where to pitch and what to pay for and what not to!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We're pleased that you enjoyed the pitch size, activities, and friendly team. Thank you for your comments regarding litter and activity costs - your feedback really helps us see where we can improve, and we hope you’ll come back soon and see a change.

Liked This was our second stay at mendip base camp. Very lovely place very family friendly with lots to do. The facilities are very clean and well kept and staff or very friendly and helpful. Make sure you bring good seeing tent pegs and a decent metal mallet as the ground is very hard. Highly recommend this site.

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked The space that you have to set up and enjoy is vast. We were lucky to find an area with lots of space for the tent and the cars to park. Toilets and showers clean and close by. Very few queues for toilets or showers.

Disliked The ground is very rocky. If you can get the stronger tent pegs then do.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your great review, and helpful tip regarding the rocky ground!

Local attractions

Most of your time at this site is sure to be taken up immersing yourself in the outdoor adventures of the Mendip Activity Centre, but there’s also a range of other pursuits to consider while in the area. Set on cycling? Wheel your way along the Strawberry Line (around a 10-minute ride away) – this old railway between Cheddar and Yatton is now a family-friendly path. Make sure to drop by the Thatchers farm (five minutes) at the entry of the trail for sips of some famed cider. Check out the rest of the Mendips too, perhaps while meandering across Cheddar Gorge (15 minutes), Burrington Combe (10 minutes), or the lakes of Blagdon and Chew Valley (20 minutes). Outside of the National Landscape, wander Weston-super-Mare’s seafront and pier while feasting on fish and chips (20 minutes) and give Bristol (half an hour) a little attention – particularly the city’s historic harbour, suspension bridge and SS Great Britain.
