  • Small off-grid farm campsite two miles from Wells
  • A 10-minute drive from Glastonbury; Cheddar 20 minutes
  • Fresh eggs, fruit and veg available; campfires welcome
Off-grid adventure awaits in rural Somerset at The Lorax Patch, a friendly little site just two miles south of the cathedral city of Wells. There's a lot to like about this family-friendly farm, from the little stream that runs through it to the cute animals or the fresh eggs, veg and fruit that are regularly available to guests. The facilities here are on the simpler side, with composting loos and a single hot shower, but what The Lorax Patch lacks in amenities, it makes up for in freedom. Here, you can be sure you'll have the space to pitch up at a good distance from your nearest neighbour, and all spots come with their own firepit and picnic table. Any kids you bring along for the ride will be sure to experience that same freedom too, as there's a stream they can explore a short walk away. Adventures further afield are also easily sorted, as a footpath runs through the site, and a nearby cycle path connects the place up with Wells, which you can reach quickly and safely in just a few minutes by bike.

Local attractions

Wells (five minutes' drive/a few minutes' cycle), the smallest city in England, packs in a good number of top tourist attractions for its size. The main event for most will probably be the cathedral, built in 1175, which towers over the surrounding buildings, but other sights include the moated Bishop's Palace and Vicars' Close, commonly held to be the oldest residential street in Europe. Within a few miles of Wells, you can climb to the top of Glastonbury Tor (10 minutes) or explore the town's many independent shops, pick your way between the rocks and hike up Cheddar Gorge (20 minutes) or head underground to explore the caves and caverns at Wookey Hole (20 minutes), one of the many interesting geological features on this side of the Mendip Hills. Venturing a little bit further afield opens up more possibilities – you could explore the stunning World Heritage Site that is Bath city centre (45 minutes), drive on a mini safari past lions, hippos and wolves at Longleat (40 minutes) or pack your bucket and spade and explore the Somerset coast at Burnham-on-Sea (40 minutes) or Brean (50 minutes).

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked This was a lovely campsite - it has just a few pitches, very private, with long grass between them. The facilities were great and the owner was lovely to deal with. I really enjoyed my 1 night stay.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Lovely little site with pitches cut into the long grass and a table / fire-pit with each pitch. Toilet facilities were good and the shower worked well. Site owner was very friendly when we met in the morning

Disliked I had difficulty finding the site using the address Pitch Up supplied; problem solved when I put Lorax Patch into Google maps

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. I'll try and improve the way that Pitch Up directs people to our site. Google Maps is certainly the best option!
