  • Well-equipped bell tents on a remote farm in Dartmoor National Park
  • Ashburton 10 minutes’ drive; Goodrington beach 40 minutes
  • Dog friendly; communal fridge; direct access to moorland walks
Take a deep dive into Dartmoor National Park at Dartmoor Meadow, a dog-friendly site on a farm a 15-minute drive from Haytor Rocks, on the eastern side of the moor. It is blissfully peaceful at this remote location, which is in fact so remote that you ought to cast at least a glance (and make it a careful glance) at the directions, lest you end up on a bridletrack by mistake. Once you make it on site, accommodation is in a bell tent with a real double bed, bedside tables and a chest of drawers for storage, plus indoor and outdoor bistro sets for… well, indoor or alfresco dining. The tents sit in the middle of a meadow that has been left to grow naturally. Cue a variety of colourful wildflowers attracting bees and butterflies, plus the chance to see wild animals such as deer, fox, badgers and assorted birds. Besides a composting toilet, there is a communal fridge and a barbecue for guests, and biodegradable washing-up liquid, hand wash and cleaning spray are also provided. Ashburton (10 minutes’ drive) has several shops (including a deli and a bakery), plus a few restaurants, while Widecombe in the Moor (10 minutes) has a traditional pub dating from the 18th century. The surrounding moorland can be accessed via a nearby bridletrack (the one you don’t want to accidentally drive along…), and if you fancy a spot of wild swimming, the River Dart at Spitchwick is about two miles away (five minutes by car or a 25-minute bike ride). Alternatively, you can hit splendid Devon beaches such as sandy Goodrington (40 minutes) and shingly Babbacombe (45 minutes), a popular snorkelling spot.

Route directions

From Buckland in the Moor, drive for about one mile along Elliots Hill, then take the farm track on the left-hand side. Drive past the Elliots Hill Farm properties (on the right-hand side) and continue through a tunnel of trees. Ignore the unmarked right-hand turn; after 300 yards you will see a farm track on the left-hand side marked Challamoor Farm on the grey gate. Take the farm track (please note it is unsurfaced); when you reach the end, turn right into the gate marked Challamoor (not Challamoor Farm). Parking is available on the driveway/entrance, access to the meadow by car is not permitted.
