  • Spacious pitches at a 260-acre Surrey estate near Cranleigh
  • A 15-minute drive to Winkworth Arboretum; 40 minutes to the coast
  • Fishing and social club on site; profits support local charity
A holiday for yourselves, and you get to do good for others at the same time? It’s a win-win situation when you stay at Springbok Campsite, part of a secluded estate on the border of Surrey and West Sussex. The estate is run as a charity that provides accommodation and support for former seafarers, and any profits made by the campsite will be fed back into providing services for the residents. Concerned you may have to sacrifice certain facilities in order to support this worthy cause? Not a bit of it – this is a lovely site that’s part of a 260-acre estate made up of farmland, forest and formal gardens. You’ll be able to take walks around at your leisure, perhaps stopping in at the pretty walled garden or picking up a day pass for some fishing on the one-acre lake. Dog-friendly pitches here are spacious and fuss-free, and have access to basic shower and toilet facilities, plus a camp kitchen/washing-up shack. Guests are also welcome to stop in for a drink at the on-site social club. Barbecue evenings at your pitch are permitted too, if you’d like – there are shops 10 minutes’ drive away in Cranleigh for all the bits you’ll need. (Please note that barbecues must be raised off the ground and disposed of responsibly once they have cooled down.) If a country walk and pub are musts on your rural break, you’ll be pleased to hear that both are on hand – in fact, you could combine both with a stroll to one of the hostelries within a 30/45-minute walk. For other outings nearby you’ll have a choice of heading north to the Surrey Hills, west to the South Downs National Park or south to the coast (about 40 minutes away).

Liked Hardstanding pitches and grass in excellent condition and large. Very gentle slope. Very quiet (apart from Gatwick planes which are relatively unobtrusive). Beautiful rural surroundings. Lots of forest walks with loads of birdlife (it was very muddy when we were there but there has been excessive rain this winter so far). Facilities are basic but adequate and clean. Lots of hot water in shower. Washing up area very good and indoors, which is a bonus!
Felt very welcome in the bar in the main house for a drink - lovely views over the grounds.
Happy to be supporting Care Ashore charity with our stay.

Disliked Only a couple of minor things...hand drier in ladies not working very well and could do with a squeegy and mop in the facilities to keep the floors cleaner (muddy footprints).

From the manager: Thank you so much Elizabeth for your lovely review. We are really pleased you enjoyed the peaceful settings, the pitches, and the woodland walks, and that you felt welcome during your stay with us.
Thank you also for your helpful feedback about the facilities - we will be looking into the hand dryer and floor cleaning. We truly appreciate your support of Care Ashore and look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Liked Nice level solid ground, free from mud etc club house is nice, warm and friendly staff. A pleasure to sit inside and have a drink.

Disliked Would recommend hard standing cross tongue to electrical and water points to safe walking over the water logged grass in front of these areas as a suggestion.

From the manager: Thank you Mark - great to hear you enjoyed the pitches and clubhouse. We appreciate the helpful suggestion and hope to see you again soon.

Liked Lovely little site.very quiet and easy to use. Facilities great and not busy in January.

Disliked Bit scruffy on the route in and around the nearby trade units. Visible old mattresses. Chairs. Car parts. Would be easy to clean up or dispose of to help the environment if nothing else?

We appreciate your comments about the approach to the site and agree it’s an area that could be improved. Some of this is outside our direct control, but we are taking your feedback on board and addressing what we can.

Liked Only our 2nd night out in the new camper, so was looking to upgrade from off grid hard standing to hook up and showers. This was a great overnighter for this time of year… and it’s been really wet of late. The pitches were easily located by following the signage. As a rookie I just placed a space between the other camper vans and connected up the van. A quick scout around to find the toilets and showers and then a look at the map to find a walking route to a pub for some dinner. A shout out to the Sir Roger Tichborne at Billingshurst. Very welcoming and accommodating after a 40 minute walk in the dark. Google maps was trying to take us back on ourselves, but the map showed a route by foot cutting 15 mins off the trek. Be careful after dark ( and daylight), as the last mile or so has a bit with no path. Very quiet throughout the night except the sound of rain on the roof. The gravel hard standings drained we’ll dispute the downpour. Showered in the main shower combined with the toilets - short walk from the pitches. Didn’t top
up the water or empty the sink waste, but wished I had as both needed doing. Facilities for this were well signposted.

Disliked Nothing to dislike. get spot for overnighter and more in the summer months.

From the manager: Dear Camper

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed review - we really appreciate it. We are so glad we could provide a comfortable stopover, especially given the wet weather, and that you enjoyed the peace and quiet of the site.

Its great to hear the hardstandings drained well and that the facilities and signage were easy to find. Thanks also for the local pub shout-out - we will pass that on!

We hope to see you again soon!

Local attractions

If you like a good garden visit on your break, you’ve come to the right spot – it won’t take long at all to reach the likes of the National Trust gardens at 121-acre Winkworth Arboretum (15 minutes’ drive) and Nymans (35 minutes), with woodlands, a lake and natural play areas. The colourful Ramster Gardens (15 minutes) and pretty Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (35 minutes) are certainly worth adding to the list too. If you’ve brought the kids along, a trip to Fishers Farm Park (15 minutes) may well be on the cards for tractor rides, mini golf, treetop trails, pony rides and lots of animals to meet (plus indoor play areas in case of dodgy weather). You might also like to see the big birds at Surrey Hills Falconry (20 minutes) or hit the beach in Worthing (40 minutes). No kids in your party? A day at Denbies Wine Estate (35 minutes) might appeal instead then – you can sign up for tours and tastings here, and there’s a lovely restaurant too.
