  • Glamping yurts on an eco-friendly farm a 15-minute drive from Lewes
  • South Downs National Park 15 minutes’ drive; Brighton 45 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; miniature golf and table tennis; occasional movie nights
Sitting between the High Weald National Landscape and South Downs National Park (15 minutes’ drive to either), Crockstead Fields is an eco-friendly glamping spot on a farm a five-minute drive from Uckfield, in East Sussex. Accommodation is in well-appointed yurts with stylish interiors – from colourful textiles (bed linens, throws and rugs) to decorative touches such as plants and cute lanterns. As well as plenty of storage, the yurts come with a woodburning stove and a cooking corner with a two-hob burner – plus, of course, anything you might need to whip up (and devour) a meal. (By the way, Uckfield is the nearest place to source cooking ingredients and any other essentials.) Those who don’t believe in slaving over a stove while on holiday can take a short drive down the A22: a pub less than a mile away serves Sunday roasts, bangers and pies alongside real ales and country wines. When it comes to letting your hair down, Crockstead Fields also delivers, with a selection of garden games ranging from vintage (miniature golf and a coconut shy) to bang up to date (a nerf shooting gallery); there’s table tennis, too. In addition, on selected weekends a food truck and cocktail bar is set up in the field, and the owners might also arrange music sessions or a film night. If you’re in an introspective mood, you might prefer to take yourself to the firepit, or head into the woods for a walk with your canine companion (a welcome guest here).

Yurt

Liked Very comfy beds, idyllic location with own private woodland section for kiddies to build dens, fire inside was lovely to heat us up for the evenings. We had deer visit us, quite literally right outside the yurt, in the mornings which was lovely. Gas stove was ideal for cooking and lots of cutlery, plates etc provided. Enough wood provided for the fire pit outside and the fire in the yurt. Henry welcomed us and was very friendly and accommodating. Compost toilet was comfortable enough and the shower was lovely and hot.

Disliked We would love it as more of a romantic, couple getaway...for our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 young children), it was very tight space, not really able to move, and had to move the gas stove outside just to lay the other bed down. This meant it was tricky to open our suitcases for clothes etc and there wasn't much other storage space, so it was overly cosy for us. The mini golf we couldn't get to, because there was another Emily in the bell tents and the golf is situated in the centre of them, there were no other entertainment options on whilst we were visiting and fhe coconut shy/nerf base was very rustic/disheveled, so the entertainment part we didn't think was quite as advertised, but having a bit of woodland, free roam for walks, and a starlit sky was enough for us to be happy with during our stay. The other group there were also very loud gone past 11pm, without anyone on site to be able to ask them to reduce noise levels, so maybe a consideration when booking in families with younger children.

Local attractions

The classic summer ritual at Glyndebourne (10 minutes’ drive) involves a picnic on the lawn during the interval of whatever opera is being performed in the modern indoor theatre. In addition to the renowned summer festival, Glyndebourne also hosts a six-week season of performances and concerts in the autumn. Lewes (15 minutes) has cobbled streets and pretty cottages like the Anne of Cleves House Museum, a timber-framed house where the kids might like to dress up in Tudor-era outfits. There are views across the town and the surrounding countryside from the top of the keep of Lewes Castle & Museum. For a day at the beach, head to Pevensey Bay Beach (half an hour) or Brighton (45 minutes), where you can have fish and chips on the pebbles, check out the thrill rides at the end of Brighton Palace Pier or fly up the Brighton i360 observation deck. The spectacular Royal Pavilion dazzles with its ornate cupolas and elegant interiors.
