  • Spacious living quarters and modern bathrooms; stunning Lakeland views
Stunning views of Blencathra anyone? With a large dose of comfort thrown in? Sounds like you’d better be making a beeline for Whitbarrow Farm Stay, 15 minutes’ drive from Penrith in Cumbria and – amazingly, when you consider just how peaceful it is – a handy 10 minutes by car from Junction 40 of the M6. Smart modern accommodation is in spacious wooden pods with powerful showers in pristine ensuite bathrooms, well-equipped kitchens and open-plan living areas. Each unit sleeps up to two guests in double beds (all linens provided), so they are best suited to couples seeking a quiet hideaway amid dramatic Lakeland countryside. Outdoor space runs to decking with glorious vistas to Blencathra in one direction and the Pennines in the other. Should you be keen to explore on foot, there are footpaths in all directions from the pitches; you can also be enjoying a pint in one of two local pubs within five minutes’ drive, and there is a farm shop about the same distance away.

Local attractions

visit the mysterious Giant’s Grave – thought to be of Norse origin – in St Andrew’s Churchyard, and learn about local history at the Penrith and Eden Museum. Afterwards, have a poke around the photogenic remains of 14th-century Penrith Castle. There’s more local heritage to be uncovered at Castlerigg Stone Circle (20 minutes), dating from around 3,000 BCE and backed by spectacular views to Helvellyn and High Seat. Find out about the region’s industrial past in the former copper quarry at Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum (15 minutes), where you can also take a ride on a steam train. If you fancy trying out more heritage transport, you can cruise Ullswater (20 minutes) by vintage boat from Ullswater Steamers (25 minutes). When you’d rather explore under your own steam, the lake is surrounded by cycling and hiking trails. Perhaps you’d like to summit Blencathra (15 minutes’ drive to the car park)? Estimate at least three hours and always check the weather before you set off.
