  • Simple off-grid pitches in the Cumbria countryside
  • A 10-minute drive from Penrith, with easy access from the M6
  • On the edge of the Lake District National Park for outdoor activities
Time to escape from the constant influx of emails and social media posts? Take off to Highfield Campsite, in the Cumbria countryside, for a digital detox and some time spent out in the natural world. This simple grass site is entirely off grid, with no electricity or running water (in fact, the only facilities to speak of are portable toilets). And that means it’s a fabulous spot to step away from the digital world for a while, with no wifi and no charging facilities for your gadgets. Instead, let your mind slow down as you take in the views, get your barbecue going and plan your outings in the local area. What might those outings involve? Well, you’ll be just outside the Lake District National Park and close to the North Pennines National Landscape, so walks, bike rides, watersports, fishing, boat trips and even mountain climbs could be on the menu. Castles and other historic buildings are in good supply too, or you could just choose to settle in a rural pub for a couple of hours to sample the local ales. With heaps of open space and sweeping green views, this is very much a relaxed rural site – but civilisation is not far off. Penrith is about 10 minutes’ drive away (and a handy place to find shops and places to eat), and the M6 is equally close by for easy journeys in and out.
