Yapham Holds Farmhouse Campsite: A sunny day on site

General

  • Popular and peaceful countryside site a short drive from York
  • On the Way of the Roses 170-mile coast to coast ride
  • Flowers and wine available on request

Seeking serenity in scenic countryside but get antsy if you’re not close to the bright lights? Hold that thought.

City, countryside, a coast to coast cycle route and free-range and curious chickens are all features of very popular and very fab Yapham Holds Farmhouse Campsite, which will see sorted those who ditheringly fancy both urban and rural on one break.

The farm is nicely rooted in rural North Yorkshire countryside that verges on the Yorkshire Wolds, but is a grand and easy drive into also very fab York (or an even simpler Park and Ride trip to York from the bus station near the farm, which has additional services to Beverly and Hull.)

Bring your bike too if poss: Yapham Holds is right on the Way of the Roses 170-mile coast to coast ride from Morecambe to Bridlington and a couple of miles from the six cycle routes weaving around the countryside from the nearby market town of Pocklington.

Yapham Holds is popular for its added little touches as well as its location, like flowers and wine available on request, flowers and handwash in the spotless loo and shower block, and the knowledgeable welcome from hosts Louise and Nigel who can advise on all there is to do in the area, from museums to York ghost walks.

And the chickens? Get supplies from Pocklington two miles away and fire up the barbecue pitchside or from the decking of a camping pod to see the poultry wobble enthusiastically forth: they seem to be very much sorted in this lovely location too.

Really friendly accommodating owners, level pitches, very clean well maintained small site ideal for a short break.
Beautiful sunsets ( if you are lucky enough ).
    Quiet.

    Disliked:

During busier periods the wait to use shower or worse, toilet. I understand Covid restrictions complicates things but when you have a limited amount of toilets and showers ie one of each for both sexes in the same block and someone locks the main door to the block to prevent anyone entering at all and then decides to shower you better hope you are not in dire need as you are likely to have to wait a while. Think in the interim it would be an idea to have a portaloo or two. Shower I think you can work around and come back later, not so much with use of the toilet.
Think in order to make site suitable to stay for more than a short break it needs an area for laundry, microwave, fridge/freezer.

From the manager...

Hi thank you for your review, and are glad you enjoyed your stay with us. I am sorry you were unhappy with the toilet/shower facilities, at the moment working with government restrictions is frustrating and at busier times there can be a wait, which then calls on patience from everyone. We hope you will return again when life returns to a better 'normal'.

Recognise that COVID has an impact but the toilet/washing situation is not ideal. One person in the amenities block stops anyone else from a different family from using the facilities.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments, and are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. I appreciate at the moment the toilet and shower situation is not ideal, but as we have to follow government guidelines and adhere to the 2 metre distancing rule this at times means there is a wait to use the facilities.

Lovely, friendly site with a great layout and facilities. Good location, spotless facilities, simple check-in. Great for our few days in East Yorkshire. Would definitely return.

    Disliked:

Due to COVID restrictions at the moment if someone is using the small toilet / shower block then there is no alternative facility that you can use which can result in long waits! Would have been great to have somewhere to freeze iceblocks (again, this may only be missing due to COVID restrictions?).

From the manager...

Hi Thank you for a great review, we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. I am sorry due to restrictions you had a bit of a wait at busy times our shower and toilet block is small and social distancing is difficult hopefully the situation will ease. We are also going to be looking to build new and improved facilities which will improve things. I wish you had asked about the ice blocks we would have been more than happy to freeze them for you. Hope we see you again in the future.

What a fantastic site within a mile and a half of Pocklington.
Great pitches with lots of room, warm showers always available and clean, and two superb hosts in Nigel and Louise always available and on hand to help with the slightest thing
I’ve already booked two further trips to this little gem of a site on the strength of my experience.
    Well done both of you.

Local attractions

Pretty market town Pocklington is well-served with pubs, tearooms, restaurants and gift shops as well as supermarkets, and it's also got a skate park for guests travelling with youngsters or who want to revisit their childhood roots/skinned elbows.

More placid but also very impressive pursuits lurk among the lily ponds and lakes of lovely Burnby Hall Gardens just outside Pocklington: the UK’s national collection of hardy water lilies lives here, but kids will likely be more open-mouthed among the giant fish that dwell in the gardens’ two lakes and take food directly from the fingers of awestruck guests.

Step into the Stewart Museum afterwards for a look at the collections of former hall owner Major Percy Stewart’s eight grand tours in the early twentieth century – lucky old Major S crossed every continent on his travels and hauled back quite the collection of artefacts, many of which are now on display.

North Yorkshire, York and surroundings are top spots for holidaymakers who like historical houses and museums; outside York, award-winning Eden Camp on a former POW camp near Malton tells many tales of World War II, and both Harrogate and Leeds, around an hour’s drive away from Yapham Holds, are crammed with historical highlights.

In York, hang out with the Vikings at the Jorvik Centre or take a wander around the National Railway Museum or the Yorkshire Air Museum on Halifax Way, the biggest independent air museum in the country. And surely it’s essential to see York Minster and York Castle Museum too…?

Fifteen miles north, eighteenth-century Castle Howard in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a right royal day out by bus from York’s Station Avenue or by train from the main station.

Towards Hull, dive into another topping attraction at award-winning marine centre and aquarium The Deep at Sammy’s Point, where seven species of shark swim among the thousands of sea critters in the aquarium tanks.
