  • Spacious adults-only Yorkshire site with easy access from the A64
  • A 20-minute drive from central York and 45 minutes from the coast
  • On-site bar and pizza trailer; eco-friendly site with a nature trail
Gorgeous North Yorkshire countryside all around, handy access to the A64 and York a mere 20 minutes’ drive down the road… there’s no denying Flaxton Meadows is in a very fine setting indeed. Food and drinks are also fairly easy to come by here; it has an on-site bar, Champers for Campers, and freshly made pizza is available to buy from a pizza airstream, G Papa J's Pizza. And the site has a good mix of rural views too – it has farmland on one side and the wildlife-packed Strensall Common heathland on the other. And that means plenty of options for cyclists and walkers, whether you’re into strolling on local paths or tackling longer outings on the likes of the Ebor Way or Yorkshire Wolds Way. Don’t know where to start? The team on site are on hand to offer advice. As well as day trips to York, they also frequently recommend outings to Castle Howard and Scarborough. Being rather proud of their area, the owners have put in a lot of effort to make their place eco-friendly, kitting it out with renewable energy sources, establishing wildlife areas and using sustainable building materials where possible. A nature trail and educational boards help guests to get to know the area and nest-box webcams give everyone the chance to get a closer look at what’s rustling in the trees.

What customers say

Well-kept adults-only spot, spotless facilities (even underfloor heated washrooms). Guests rave about roomy pitches, ace staff, bar & pizza van. Handy for York, though a car's handy for local shops. Occasional WiFi hiccups noted.

Liked The facility’s were very good showers and wash room very clean and warm , bar was welcoming and friendly with a lovely pizza van out side . Pitch had loads of space with lovely views . Nice little nature walk around the outsides of the camp .

Disliked Unfortunately we found the camping field far to open with no storm ( David ) shelter at all you really are wide open . There are no local bus routes going past the site .

Powered concrete slab caravan site

Liked Very spacious and level pitches, friendly staff, cute little on site bar with decent prices, quiet site, very clean and modern toilets and showers with a (rarely found at campsites!) caddy to hang your washing stuff, showers are push button type, and stay on for approx 30 seconds each time which is perfectly adequate for each step of showering.

Wifi worked fine for us on Pitch 13 when we were sitting outside or in our van with the door open, less so when closed, but that's ok with us anyway as we don't go away to use the internet.

Disliked We did request a pitch near the facilities due to minor mobility issues, but this sadly wasn't granted, despite us booking in January, arriving at 2pm and the nearer pitches being free upon arrival. Presumably they were booked by returning guests.

That said, it is only a fairly small site so it wasn't a big issue, just something to bear in mind if you do have more serious mobility issues.

Local bus services to York, Malton etc are almost non existent (not the site's fault of course!) but something to consider if you can't/don't want to drive around.

Liked Clean tidy site, ditto facilties.

New year's eve bar/party roaring success.

Disliked Plot numbering appears to have gone pear shaped.

To be picky the quiz was a little too long, would have preffered a little longer chatting

Local attractions

Starting your explores of the local area is as simple as wandering next door to Strensall Common, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and with plenty of paths to wander along (some of them accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs). York (20 minutes) is a must, of course – for history at the Jorvik Viking Centre, walks along the old walls and visits to the National Railway Museum. For more on the heritage front, next stops should certainly be Castle Howard (15 minutes), Nunnington Hall (25 minutes) and Rievaulx Abbey (35 minutes). There's a Go Ape adventure park at Dalby Forest (35 minutes) for an active day out. And there’s always the prospect of a trip to the coast at Filey (45 minutes) or Scarborough (50 minutes)… Can’t make your mind up? The team here has assembled a collection of podcasts to give you a flavour of some of the options and help you make your decisions.
