  • Peaceful off-grid site among woods and wildflowers
  • A 10-minute drive to Whitby or Robin Hood's Bay
  • Around a mile from two dog-friendly pubs; next to protected habitats
A wild setting with a wonderfully secluded feeling to it – North Yorkshire’s Coast and Camplight should be a nice pick for those who value peace, wildlife and being off the grid. Just three miles from Whitby and with lovely views down to the town, its abbey and the sea, this site has an ancient woodland on one side and wildflower fields on the other. Those protected habitats mean this place is teeming with wildlife – look out for the resident barn owls, along with deer, badgers, bats and all sorts of birds. To preserve that natural setting, no cars are allowed on site – you’ll leave your car at the gate and use a wheelbarrow to transport your kit (with someone on hand to help out if needed). The site is kind to the environment, with facilities like composting toilets and a water tap. It's also completely off-grid; there's no wifi and only intermittent phone signal – just the place for a digital detox. If you fancy heading out in search of food, there are two nice (and dog-friendly) pubs about a mile away, and a farm with homemade ice cream just under an hour's walk away.

Unpowered grass campervan or tent site

Liked Amazing little site. Pitches nicely spread out, so quiet and relaxing. Unfortunately we didn't see the wildlife others mention, but got treated to a magnificent sunset with the Abbey on the horizon, followed by star gazing. The honesty caravan was so well stocked, from drinks, to pot noodles, honey to spare dry socks. You could charge phones, freeze ice packs. Everything you needed. We will definitely be back again

Disliked The composting toilet was a big grim! Spotlessly clean at all times, but the smell when you went in... its the nature of what it is, but be prepared!

Unpowered grass campervan or tent site

Liked very peaceful well spaced site. This was not cramming pitches in but made with respect for their campers, Allowing them a large piece of the field each. The view was eonderful with Whitby Abbey and the sea in the distance and it felt very trustful and kind.

Unpowered grass campervan or tent site

Liked The Coast and Camplight camping field has stunning views across fields and out to sea with Whitby Abbey visible on the horizon. Tent pitches are set apart from each other with individual paths mown to them through the grass. It's not far to carry your camping gear from where cars are parked just inside the entrance to the field. There's a compost loo in the camping field and access to water and the 'honesty caravan' just across the lane where you can charge phones, make tea and coffee and buy ice creams and wood for braziers.
To sum up the whole experience its like wild camping with a compost loo and extra facilities just yards away if you want to partake. The owners have really created a beautiful place to experience the outdoors in a low impact way and if thats what you are looking for I cannot recommend enough.

Liked Quiet as limited number of pitches as the tents are spread out.
Cars cannot park next to tents.
No noisy campers when we stayed.
Usefully stocked, on-site honesty shop.
Nice compost toilet.
Very flexible for arrival and departure times (no rushing to pack up and go makes it much more relaxing).
Friendly owner.
Great location.

Disliked Nothing.

Local attractions

Start by taking a stroll to see your surroundings – there are lots of lovely walks from the site, and about a mile away you can link up with the Cinder Track, a disused railway line running to Whitby or Robin Hood’s Bay. You can also follow part of the Coast to Coast trail, which passes through the farm. A little beck in the woods is a nice place to cool off with a paddle when you return. Having seen Whitby from afar you’ll surely want to get down there to explore. If you're not walking, you can drive down there in about 10 minutes to visit the abbey, 199 Steps and Captain Cook Memorial Museum, wander through the historic streets and grab fish and chips on the beach. For more outings, Robin Hood’s Bay and Falling Foss Tea Garden are both 10 minutes’ drive away, and it’s a 20-minute drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Goathland.
