  • Small motorhome site on the edge of the North York Moors
  • Walk to Roseberry Topping and Captain Cook’s Monument
  • Adults-only site with dogs welcome; pub five minutes' walk
Tiny, adults-only and with strict rules in place about music and noisy groups – Cooks View Motorhome Stop makes a lovely spot for a peaceful break on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. As the name suggests, this site is designed for motorhome stays only – each of the handful of pitches has electric hookup and access to other handy facilities including fresh water supply, an Elsan point, a grey waste point and rubbish disposal (although please note there are no toilets or showers). In another useful bonus, there’s easy access from the A172 so you won’t have to deal with too many little country lanes to get here. To preserve that peaceful atmosphere, children and stag/hen parties are not allowed at this site, and there’s a ‘no music after 9pm’ rule. Dogs are welcome as long as they’re kept on leads while on site; there’s a small enclosed dog run area where they can have a good scamper about. Once settled in, you might find that food and/or a drink are on your mind – both are easily sorted at the pub five minutes’ walk away, which serves food throughout the day. There are several more pubs and other places to eat in the vicinity too, and bus services to the likes of Great Ayton and Stokesley (both five minutes’ drive) make travels nice and easy. If your main plan is to walk in the moors, you’ve picked the right spot here – both Roseberry Topping and Captain Cook’s Monument are a few miles away on foot, and there are plenty more countryside and coastal trails nearby too.

Local attractions

Roseberry Topping and Captain Cook’s Monument are a couple of the best spots to visit in the North York Moors National Park, so it’s well worth planning a walk over there while you’re here – they’re both about four miles away and can be combined on one circular walk if you like. You’ll also be close to the Cleveland Way for more walks, and there are plenty of cycle trails around as well. The national park offers up plenty more attractive spots too – places like Mallyan Spout or Bank Top Kilns (both 45 minutes’ drive) might take your fancy, or maybe trips to Rievaulx Abbey (35 minutes), Museum of Victorian Science (35 minutes) and Ryedale Folk Museum (40 minutes). For a change of scenery, the North Yorkshire coast beckons, perhaps for a stroll on Saltburn beach (20 minutes), a wander through the pretty fishing village of Staithes (35 minutes) or a day of wandering around Whitby (45 minutes), checking out the abbey, the 199 Steps and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum.
