Pitching field

  • Pub site on the edge of the pretty Yorkshire village of Reedness
  • Carvery Sundays and pizza night once a week
  • Ouse riverside walks and the Blacktoft Sands reserve very close by
Half measures? Not here. East Yorkshire's Half Moon Inn is fully sorted for location, facilities and popular Sunday roasts – how handy that you'll be pitching up right by a pub. Riverside walks along the handsome banks of the Ouse as well as twitching at the Blacktoft Sands RSPB reserve within five minutes' drive are among the many options for when you've worked your way through the pub menu and are seeking something slightly more active (if only to ensure your clothes still fit when your holiday comes to an end). And as local town Goole (10 minutes' drive) is an East Riding port town, it's an easy ride by car – or bike – to the Yorkshire coast for strolling upon the sands. But back to that menu. The pub is open for food from a general menu on Mondays to Saturdays (note that during low season, the pub's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) or a full carvery on Sundays (do book a table for this latter, it's rightly popular). A stonebaked pizza night runs on Mondays (high season only) too and there are free meals for kids at certain times of the week, as well as evening entertainment for grownups awaits including quizzes and live music – fully expect to be spending quite some time in this friendly pub. The site has toilets, internet access and ice pack freezing. Barbecues (off ground only) are allowed, but you'll probably yearn to have meals in the pub every night: no point having a Yorkshire pub holiday in half measures…

What customers say

This chilled-out, riverside spot gets props for its friendly crew and cracking pub grub. Paddock's pretty flat and tidy, with sweet strolls by the River Ouse. Toilets a bit old-school and the coin showers a bit steep for some, but they're upgrading! Great for a peaceful getaway.

Liked The facilities were relatively basic but adequate, close by and clean. The adjacent pub was good, well staffed and gave friendly service. The food was very good, especially the Sunday buffet and very reasonably priced.
Riverside walk directly accessible from the site.

Disliked I thought the pitch expensive relative to the standard experienced elsewhere.

Liked The site was good, plenty of space in front of you. Hardly any noise from the road. We had a lovely hello from the owner when we arrived. He told us about the local area and the walks you could do. The pub was great. We ended up eating there 4 evenings of our 4 night stay. You will have to try their chips. Oh wow, they were amazing, as was the rest of the food. Lovely staff, very helpful.

Disliked Showers weren't good for the money, so only used once.

Liked Nice quiet site next to the river Ouse, number of pitches which all look fairly level. Lovely pub as well which serves cracking food and would highly recommend if you are staying or just passing, had dinner one night and Sunday lunch.
Only reason really for the 8 stars and not higher is that the toilets aren’t great and the hard standing pitches are not really hard standing, although there has been a lot of rain and so that doesn’t help and the owner did say he is adding a lot more stone when it dries out a bit. However as they are at the moment, it is easy to get stuck or sink when trying to position into a pitch.

Disliked See above.

Disliked We didn't stay there my sister in law had arrived before us and the ground was so wet and muddy she got stuck and had to call the owner to tow her moterhome out of the mud he was very rude towards her shouting at her she went to the toilet facilities and they were dirty she then booked us into another site we stayed there couldn't possibly stay at the half moon site so all in all a very expensive weekend

From the manager: How can you even review us when you didn't even visit?
firstly your sister-in-law gave us the wrong contact info so we could send her the check in details.
We accommodated her early arrival, they drove straight on to the wrong pitch & got stuck in the wet grass, of course the ground was soft we've had weeks of rain, have you been living under a rock you doughnut? All she had to do was call the pub phone (of which she called to arrange her early arrival) & ask what pitch? where to go?
I was annoyed at her stupidity but she had the attitude not me, stood there puffing on her cigarette, while I crawled around in the mud looking for a towing point to pull their motorhome off the grass. If you cant drive a motorhome then don't buy one. Don't know who is the biggest idiot, her or you for reviewing a place you didn't even visit. I would offer a free visit to see what you missed out on, but Ive just put a new sign on the campsite gate that says 'No stupid people passed this point' so your out!!

Liked The best food ever in the pub! Great value for money!!

Lovely riverside walks with the pooches. Very friendly staff who couldn’t be more helpful and welcoming.

We were greeted with a smile. The wife loved the meals so much that she’d be happy to travel a couple of hours to eat at the pub again.

Disliked The charge for the showers, I’m fine with paying but I felt the charge was a tad much, a longer duration would’ve felt better value.

Local attractions

Set off from the site for strolls along the Ouse, along the riverside path to the villages of Whitgift and Ousefleet, a mile and two miles respectively, or further afield to Adlingfleet (four miles) or Fockerby and Garthorpe (each six miles away, and surely worth an extra dessert at the pub later). You can also opt to hike the three miles to Blacktoft Sands RSPB reserve, for more active hours wandering around the biggest tidal reedbed in England to spot the likes of marsh harriers and bitterns. Pick up the birdwatching challenge sheet from the centre's reception to see how many you can tick off; prizes are awarded for the best sightings. Guaranteed sightings are among the critters of Yorkshire Wildlife Park, 40 minutes' drive away just outside Doncaster: species to see here include lions, tigers, lemurs, baboons and the only polar bears living in an English zoo. Hull is 45 minutes away for shopping and sightseeing.
