  • Friendly, simple site half a mile from pubs in the village of Barrow
  • In the grounds of a fitness centre with a gym on site
  • Couple of minutes' walk to archery, horse riding and assault course
Ready for action? Fab four-acre Church View Campsite is attached to a well-established fitness centre and event space in the little village of Barrow, 15 minutes’ drive from Bury St Edmunds. Fitness fans, active types and those who just want to have a chuckle at their mates trying to scale sizeable obstacles should all have a whale of a time at this place. The on-site gym’s available to guests on a pay as you go basis; if you’d rather work out in the open, drop in next door to the assault course at The Playground, fire a few arrows at the archery club or wander up the road to the local riding stables. There are escape rooms and a miniature golf course should you fancy something different too. After all this activity, it's worth bearing in mind that (as long as you’re not on some sort of self-inflicted bootcamp) you can reward your efforts with something tasty from the chippy, café or pubs 10 minutes’ stroll away. The site also has its very own bar and café for even easier eats. Or if it’s all too much, just stay put for an evening’s cookout over a barbecue (sometimes with a spectacular sunset to boot – fingers crossed). There's also a small on-site licensed café-bar serving snacks and light bites, with a lovely bamboo garden area where you can watch the world go by with a pint or some coffee and cake.

What customers say

A friendly, spacious spot with generous pitches, cafe, play area & animals. Praised for location, cleanliness & helpful staff. Basic but clean facilities, with some "rustic" bits needing TLC. Watch out for steep entrances & outside noise.

Powered grass site (water hook-up)

Liked Lovely site quiet and well maintained. Beautiful sunset! Facilities clean.

Disliked While the showers and toilets were clean and well maintained there were not really enough showers and wash basins for the size of the site. While I like rustic there needed to be more indoor wash basins.
Also would not recommend the Sunset field if you have anything which is susceptible to wind as anything above a light breeze comes whistling across the field from all direction. - Just a fact of nature and just a warning - our blow up drive away did not like it one bit!

From the manager: Thank you for the comments. I wonder whether you found all of our washing facilities we have some additional in a building attached to the site. We could have pointed you in the right direction had we known your concerns at the time of your stay. Similarly we would have been happy to give you a pitch on our more sheltered field. We are up quite high here and the wind does blow across but I have to say it was a very windy weekend in April.
We were not aware of any queues to use the facilities and have an additional two showers ready to be opened up once maintenance allows.
We hope to see you again and please feel free to ask for a more suitable pitch should the need arise.

Not as expensive as other sites you get what you pay for .

Powered grass site (water hook-up)

Liked Great corner grass pitch plenty of room quiet site , very rustic needed a coat of paint and a tart up in places , money being spent on the loo blocks ladies showers pristine in presentation and shiny and new , lovely hosts some activities on site .

Disliked The wooden barn area hopefully was next in list for repair it was very unkept where table tennis was .

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you , we are rustic but as you see we update as and when we can. The wooden barn area is not now used as much and does need a tidy up but we will be relocating the table tennis and it at present serves as an undercover area, especially useful for cyclists to sit/eat and it houses our communal camping fridge.

Disliked The site looks very mis-mashed thrown together look, the toilet block was just Portaloos stacked together not undercover, basins to wash your hands but nothing to dry your hands with

From the manager: I am glad to say that over the winter we have been able to refurb some of the facilities. The portaloo style toilets still remain but we have plenty of other choice including two brand newly refurbished ladies shower rooms with toilets and one gents new shower room. Photos will be uploaded soon.

Disliked Too rustic!

From the manager: Thanks for the honest comments.
Just a note on the scores given - sites like ours rely heavily on reviews and on the score the reviews generate on sites like Pitch Up.
In this example Lee has headlined 'Does what it says it does' and booked us on that basis.
So then to knock the score on value for money and facilities etc bringing the overall down to 6 seems a little unfair.
Every time a lower score is received it has a knock on effect on the campsites overall score.

So my point is please be honest but please think carefully about the scores given. A 6 for you when you got what you booked might seem fair as you review but for the campsite it can have a potentially detrimental effect.

Thanks for staying and thanks for listening.

Local attractions

Up for a challenge? The Playground, just next door, has a huge assault course to tackle, along with a collection of more kid-friendly obstacles. If that’s given you an appetite for such antics, follow up with a zip through the trees on the canopy trails at Go Ape, half an hour away by car. If that’s not really your style, perhaps trot up the road from the site to Barrow Hall Stables for riding lessons, countryside hacks and summer-hols activity days that should please pony-mad nippers. Want to see the gee-gees going full pelt? The famed racecourse at Newmarket is a 15-minute drive away. Too much adrenaline? Calmer times are around too – perhaps in the cafés, gardens and abbey of Bury St Edmunds, or with a wander through the stunning gardens at Ickworth (even if you’re not usually one for a stately home, this one’s worth a visit – if only to marvel at its perfectly round Georgian rotunda building). Both are about 15 minutes away by car. The pretty half-timbered houses of Lavenham (half an hour away) are worth a look too.
