When members of the royal family long for privacy and seclusion, they head to the Sandringham Estate, their country retreat in Norfolk. If you also wish for some peace and quiet, you might want to take a leaf out of their book and grab a spot at Sandringham Camping and Caravanning Club Site. This peaceful place within the grounds of the royal estate has pitches shaded by tall trees, and dense woodland all around. Families often appreciate on-site facilities such as a playground (with swings and a climbing frame) and a parent-and-baby room; and for people holidaying with their fur babies, there’s a dog park and plenty of dog-friendly trails. This site is managed by the Camping and Caravanning Club, and available to members and non-members alike. Members are entitled to a discounted rate, so just make sure you select the correct membership option on your booking. The main attraction here is the Royal Parkland, which stretches over a whopping 20,000 acres. Accessible via a five-minute walk from the site, the parkland has numerous trails (two of them signposted) and a huge adventure playground in the woods. For a change of scenery, head to the Dersingham Bog (10 minutes’ drive), an area of heathland and woodland with thriving birdlife; if you stay until after dark, you might be lucky and see glow-worms here. The beaches of north Norfolk are a 15-minute drive away. They include Snettisham beach, a west-facing expanse of sands and mudflats that is home to avocets and other wading birds. The west-facing direction also makes this beach a top spot for watching the sun set.

Local attractions

A couple of museums in King’s Lynn (20 minutes’ drive) explore the maritime history of this medieval port town. True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum sits in a complex that includes fishermen’s cottages and a smokery, while the Lynn Museum has nautical displays, as well as archaeological artefacts. Thursford (35 minutes) has a steam engine museum with tours and fairground rides, plus an unrelated sideline in musical organs, including a grand Wurlitzer with more than 1,000 pipes. Then there’s a fairground with vintage rides such as a Ferris wheel, a helter skelter and spinning tea cups. The Norfolk Coast National Landscape stretches along The Wash (the bay separating Norfolk from Lincolnshire) all the way to Blakeney Point (50 minutes), a famed seal colony where several thousand seal pups are born every year. The area is also renowned as a dark-sky hub, with Kelling Heath (50 minutes) being one of the best spots for stargazing.
