  • Riverside pitches at a rural spot around 10 miles from Cambridge
  • Shepreth Wildlife Park 20 minutes' walk; 25 mins' drive to Audley End
  • Easy access to well-lit cycle path, main road and train station
Day out in Cambridge or some time spent wandering around the countryside? Either one is equally possible for guests staying at Shepreth Mill. This Cambridgeshire site is just under 10 miles from Cambridge city centre but also surrounded by lovely rural landscapes to explore. Getting around should be nice and straightforward – and you’ll have options too. The A10 passes just by the site, as does a new cycle path running all the way to the city (it’s all lit up at night so don’t worry about staying in town for a drink or some food). Shepreth village is a mile away, with a train station for those who’d rather get around by public transport. The village also has a tea room, and there’s a pub a few minutes' walk from the site too, but for more eating options and shops you’ll need to head to Melbourn (five minutes’ drive) or on to Royston (10 minutes). When not out and about, you’ll be staying at a pretty site that’s got a river bordering two sides and a lake within the grounds. The lake is a good place for wildlife spotting, as the island has ducks, moorhens and swans on it at all times; look out across the river Shep, meanwhile, and you may spot the residents of the badger sett on the other side. If you fancy a lengthier exploration of the river, you can stroll along the waterside path that leads to an RSPB reserve in one direction and a good coffee shop in the other. Simple facilities on site include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point.

What customers say

Handy spot, friendly & peaceful little site. Great for Cambridge & Duxford. Well-spaced, level pitches, some with nice views. Basic portacabin loos/showers clean. Owners super helpful. A10 road noise mentioned, and facilities are older but upgrades coming.

Power optional grass and gravel site

Liked Small site, only 50 minutes to cycle into the centre of Cambridge, 25 minutes to the air museum, 10 minutes to the wildlife park

Disliked Not a dislike but showers & toilets are in portacabin style buildings whilst the new block goes through planning permission/construction, still very clean and does not put us off from re booking

Power optional grass and gravel site

Liked A wonderful family run and owned small site, exactly what we hoped for. Stayed 3 nights and the local station is on the main line into london & cambridge. Facilities are good with nice hot (free) showers all lovely and clean. A good mix of hardstanding and grass and all are perfectly level.

Power optional grass and gravel site

Liked Friendly. No hassles. Close to railway station. Very relaxing

Disliked Only issue was that the postcode takes you down a dead end road. This happened to our friends and some others on site.

Power optional grass and gravel site

Liked Let me pick the pitch and left me to it.

Disliked £30 for 1 night in March is too expensive. Facilities were very basic, toilet, sink and a small patch of land to pitch on, which ordinarily is fine, but at £30 you expect a bit more. I've stayed in hostels for less and gotten a lot more. Toilet door opens towards the toilet and the space is very small so you will likely get stuck trying to open/close the door.

Power optional grass and gravel site

Liked Reasonable site with good clean facilities. Lots of hot water in showers. Welcoming host who offered local info.

Disliked Only downside is the pitches are a bit narrow which leaves you walking on grass instead of hard standing…so shoes get muddy in these winter wet conditions.

Power optional grass and gravel site

Liked Nice site, reasonably close to Cambridge by either public transport , car or even bicycle.
Nice pub about 5-10 minutes walk away with a Dobbies Garden centre a few minutes further on which has a restaurant.

Disliked I imagine the showers could get busy if the site was full. Whilst there were a number of caravans on site they looked unoccupied and I wonder if they were used by contractors during the week.
Some pitches required a very long EHU cable. My cable would not stretch to the socket from my first pitch, number 10, but a quick call to Tony got my pitch changed.
A bit of riad noise from the A10 but nothing too intrusive.
I consider £36 per night, including EHU to be a bit expensive but it is probably due to the proximity to Cambridge.

Local attractions

While you’re up in Shepreth (20 minutes' walk), stop in at Shepreth Wildlife Park to meet all sorts of exotic animals including tigers, aardvarks and red pandas. The same amount of walking in the opposite direction will take you to RSPB Fowlmere to see native species instead. It’s likely you’ll spot some wildlife while out and about too – the walk from Barrington to Haslingfield is a particular favourite, with great views over Cambridge too. For a closer look at what Cambridge (half an hour by car or public transport) has to offer, spend a day (or more) in the city, dipping in and out of the colleges, visiting the museums and taking a boat trip on the river. To see some more fabulous buildings, plan outings to the National Trust estates Wimpole Hall (15 minutes), centred around a splendid 17th-century mansion, and Anglesey Abbey (half an hour), which also has gorgeous gardens and a woodland play area. Audley End (25 minutes) is another lovely estate that’s well worth a visit.
