  • Family-friendly site on the grounds of a racecourse in Lincolnshire
  • Lincoln 35 minutes’ drive; Fitties Beach 45 minutes
  • Playground, dog exercise field, small shop and launderette
Fancy a flutter on the horses as a cheeky aside to your camping holiday? If so, Market Rasen Racecourse Caravan and Touring Site, in the northern stretches of Lincolnshire, might just be the place for you. This peaceful spot just over a mile outside Market Rasen (five minutes’ drive or a 25-minute walk) sits within the grounds of the historic racecourse, known for its chases and hurdle races. But it’s not all about equestrian sports at this splendidly green site, which welcomes families and hikers as well as racing enthusiasts. While the kids explore the playground’s miniature adventure course and make new friends, you can take your well-behaved canine buddy for a little run in the dedicated exercise field. Alternatively, venture a little further afield and roam along the forested trails in Willingham Woods (five minutes' drive), or head to the hills and valleys of the Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape (15 minutes). There are information brochures on the local area in the reception building, which also has a book swap library and a small shop selling essentials such as milk, toiletries and ice cream (definitely an essential while on holiday). The site has a heated toilet/shower block with accessible facilities for disabled guests, plus a washing-up area and a launderette in case that ‘essential’ ice cream ends up on the kids’ T-shirts instead of in their bellies. For a more nutritious meal, lively Market Rasen has plenty of cafés and restaurants, plus shops and markets where you can buy local produce for the barbecue.

Local attractions

The village of Tealby (10 minutes’ drive) looks like something out of a Merchant Ivory film, with small streets lined with pretty stone cottages and shaded trails along the River Rase. The village is the gateway to the Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape, within whose farmland and hilly landscapes you might spot wildlife such as hares and herons. Attractions in Lincoln (35 minutes) include the 11th-century cathedral, with two splendid rose windows and a library building designed by Sir Christopher Wren. After checking out the medieval castle, head down Steep Hill (‘steep’ being the key word here), a cobbled street lined with vintage boutiques and art shops. The sandy expanse at Fitties Beach (45 minutes), on the Humber Estuary, is a popular destination for kitesurfers. Behind its vegetation-covered dunes is RSPB Tetney Marshes, whose mudflats and salty lagoons draw redshanks and hen harriers, as well as wading birds.
