  • Romantic couples-only hideaway in the Herefordshire village of Orcop
  • Eastnor Castle 40 minutes’ drive; Dean Heritage Centre 45 minutes
  • Cosy and hand-built shepherd’s hut set in a totally private garden
If romance is on your mind, then the deliciously cosy and adults-only Ynys Hut, on the outskirts of Orcop village in Herefordshire, may well be that special spot for you. Tucked away in a totally private ‘secret’ garden surrounded by greenery, this cute-as-pie shepherd’s is a peaceful base for country strolls right from its door. Inside all is cosy and homely, with an open-plan layout fitting in a well-equipped kitchen corner supplied with coffee, tea and sugar, a living area with a breakfast bar and a full-size double bed (all linens are provided, but bring your own towels) with storage underneath. There’s also a woodburner to keep you toasty on chillier evenings, a TV (playing DVDs only) and board games. Found in the garden is an electric shower, loo, outdoor kitchen area and patio with a table, chairs and a barbecue/firepit. There is on-site parking for one car, and please note there is no wifi and very limited network coverage in the shepherd’s hut. It’s just 10 minutes’ walk from the local pub where you can get a cold pint and decent food after a fun-filled day of adventuring, and the nearest shop is five minutes’ drive away in Wormelow.

Local attractions

If you’re into history, there’s plenty to pique your interest hereabouts; there are fairytale castles to explore at Ludlow (an hour’s drive), standing on a promontory over the River Tame, and well-preserved medieval Goodrich (24 minutes). It’s the Georgian lakeside confection of Eastnor Castle (40 minutes) that gets the prize for the most romantic spot, however, tucked into the foot of the Malvern Hills. The Waterworks Museum - Hereford (20 minutes) showcases the story of our water supply and steam power, while the Dean Heritage Centre (45 minutes) sits on pretty Soudley Brook and has a museum of industrial heritage, a small mine and walks along the waterside. Going further back in time, you can walk up to Arthur’s Stone (35 minutes), a neolithic burial chamber with splendid views over the Malvern Hills. Other popular hikes include the yomp up Sugar Loaf (40 minutes) over the Welsh border in the Black Mountains, or a shorter, gentler route up to the landmark stand of trees atop May Hill (35 minutes).
