  • Well-maintained site on a farm in the Peak District National Park
  • Walking distance to the Tissington Trail, Dovedale and Thorpe Cloud
  • Dog-friendly pitches; 20 minutes’ walk to the local pub
When the scenery is this spectacular, you don’t need to add many extra attractions to create a great little place to stay. That’s the (very sensible) approach at Hollington End Farm, a working farm surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of the Peak District National Park. The owners here have chosen to keep things simple for that true feeling of being immersed in these fabulous Derbyshire surroundings. There are no guest toilets or showers so you’ll need to be self-contained on the bathroom front, but you’ll have access to a chemical disposal point. Pitches are in a part-sloping field with plenty of space for awnings, barbecues and camping chairs, so get yourselves set up how you like and then put your feet up to admire the splendid views. Need some barbecue supplies? The town of Ashbourne (10 minutes’ drive away) is a good place to find shops of all sorts, along with a few places to eat. If you’re more in the mood for a pub dinner, take a 20-minute walk across the farm’s fields to the pub in Thorpe. Heading the other way, a 20-minute stroll gets you to Tissington for a tea room overlooking the village duck pond. Keen to stretch your legs a bit more? A public footpath crossing the site takes you out onto endless miles of trails through the stunning scenery, including routes to Thorpe Cloud and Dovedale. And there’s good news for any hopeful wagging tails out there too – this site welcomes dogs, so they’ll be welcome to join you for a scenic stay and a walk or two.

Disliked Nothing really, grass was very muddy around pitch and fetching water but totally expected that for late Feb!

Liked We stayed at Hollington End Farm in Dec/Jan and it was an absolute delight. We had a pitch in the corner, overlooking the fields of sheep. Fortunately we were blessed with perfect weather and the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The hardstanding pitch was level, easy to access and had electric hookup. Water was available close by and when the pipes froze, the owners were so helpful and we filled up outside their farmhouse. The owners were really friendly but not intrusive and the site had a lovely relaxed feeling about it. There are no toilet or shower facilities but we chose the site knowing about this and it is not an issue for us with our own bathroom. The walking around the area is absolutely stunning. About 15 minutes away from the site is a great pub called The Old Dog and we went there a couple of times during our stay. Lovely food and great service. The Tissington Trail is also about 15 minutes away and we said that we would definitely bring our bikes along next time so that we could cycle. Tissington Village is about 20-25 minutes walk away with a lovely tea room, close to the duck pond and a number of small businesses are situated there too. A bus service runs from the main gate into Ashbourne and towards Buxton. We walked into Ashbourne and back along the Tissington Trail, great for the dogs and an easy walk for those who may not be too keen on hill walking. Another great walk was to Dovedale and up Thorpe Cloud where the views were breathtaking. It was a first time visiting the Peak District for the two of us and the site was absolutely the right choice. The owners farm sheep and beef, and they have a supply of homegrown produce for sale at really good prices. The sirloin was amazing! We were treated to a lovely restored steam engine rolling past on the road and they stopped to allow us to have a good look. Some people have commented on the road but for us it wasn't any problem at all. We live in a very quiet area at home and are extremely noise sensitive but we weren't bothered with the noise. Cars and vehicles obviously do go past but it didn't trouble either of us. The cherry on top was when the snow arrived and turned everything into a picture perfect white wonderland! We couldn't fault our stay with Stephanie and her family and would definitely return and recommend with absolutely no hesitation. Thank you for a beautiful, peaceful holiday!

Disliked Absolutely nothing!

Local attractions

Ashbourne (10 minutes’ drive) is more than just a handy place for shops – it’s also a lovely place for a wander, with heritage buildings, cobbled streets and a Thursday market. It’s also the starting point for the 13-mile Tissington Trail, a traffic-free route for walkers and cyclists; bikes can be hired locally. Delving further into the Peak District National Park might take you to places like Dovedale (five minutes), Thor’s Cave (15 minutes) and Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (15 minutes) or to popular towns like Buxton and Bakewell (both 25 minutes). Haddon Hall (25 minutes) and Chatsworth House (half an hour) both make excellent outings if you like to explore grand historic buildings. Just outside the national park’s boundaries, the cable car at Heights of Abraham (half an hour) is a great way to see some of the scenery from above. If that’s not quite enough of a thrill, try a day on the rollercoasters of Alton Towers (25 minutes) – or the rides of Gulliver’s Kingdom (25 minutes) if you’ve got smaller kids.
