What an absolute gem of a campsite. On arrival we were welcomed by Louise who was very helpful with guidance of the local walks and countryside. The view from the pitch was stunning and we couldn’t have wanted a better place to stay. People were very friendly and we were made to feel welcome right from the start. Would definitely recommend this campsite to anyone. Added bonus it’s on a farm and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing the lambs and calves, horses and very friendly dogs.

    Disliked:

Nothing at all, couldn’t find any faults if we wanted too.

Just the type of campsite I love! Not crowded, a homely friendly feel and welcoming. The perfect little place for me and my dog to have peace and tranquility. You stay on an actual farm with goats, ducks and dogs wandering around. Basic facilities but everything you need.
After arriving and set up I found a nice loop you can go around the area starting right from the road end then back through the woods.
The next day we travelled to Drigg beach which is huge!! We also walked to Stanley Ghyll Waterfall which was really amazing then back to the campsite for tea and a log fire, bliss 😃

    Disliked:

    Nothing.

You can pitch wherever you like.
    Direct footpath to Broughton.

    Disliked:

I would describe this campsite as rough rather than rustic.

There was no one to check us in on arrival. We just phoned a number and were given some basic information. Very impersonal.

There was litter on the field (coffee cups, lids, bits of plastic) which we had to move, as well as moving two heavy fire pits out of the way.

I realised on arrival that the reason this site is ‘adults only’ is actually because it is completely unsuitable for children. There is a steep drop at the edge of the field.

The camping field was waterlogged and strewn with small rocks. We had trouble finding places to secure tent pegs for our awning. It rained on the first night (nothing exceptional) and the entire field was covered by huge puddles. Feet got soaked going to the toilet.

The facilities are all near the farm buildings so if you are at the far end of the camping field it is a long way to walk to go to the toilet in the night.

The facilities are basic and poorly constructed. There is no hot water for hand washing. I was the only person using the showers and the water wasn’t hot. The shower heads are not adjustable and are angled at the curtain. The floor area outside the shower gets wet and doesn’t drain well. Showering was not pleasant, especially as it was very cold outside. The facilities building is basically an old farm shed with no insulation or heating. It was dusty with cobwebs etc and the sinks were not clean.

The washing up area is outside under a sloping roof. It was dirty and scruffy.

Being based on a working farm sounds nice but the reality was less so. The cattle were indoors due to the weather and were stood in a thick layer of their own excrement. The farm slurry pit was visible below the camping field.

There was no information visible on site about the local area. It would have been nice to have information on local walks etc.

To access the footpath to Broughton we had to climb a very steep bank. At the rear of the site. The first part of the track (the part belonging to the farm) was very churned up from farm vehicles and the gateways were huge puddles we couldn’t avoid. Once we got onto the public footpath part it was fine.

We decided to leave two days early. This was partly due to the weather but we probably would have stayed if the campsite facilities had meant we could get warm and dry and clean.

This site should take a look at what their competitors are doing and invest in some decent facilities, including a drying room, if they want to attract year-round business. They should also address the drainage issue on the camping field and remove the rocks.

Based on the facilities I would have expected this site to be cheaper.

From the manager...

Ohh dear…..sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay.
Storm Dave weekend!
90 mile an hour winds and torrential rain. It was your decision to camp here in such awful conditions not mine.
We were all notified via Amber weather warnings.

I describe my site as a basic farm Campsite, with basic toilets, showers and washing up. Many basic farm campsites have simply a portaloo!

We were trying to help our lambs and sheep in such atrocious weather, struggling with the storm. We are a working farm with a campsite not a campsite with all singing and dancing facilities and we don’t want to be. I probably gave you instructions over the phone about where to pitch and where the facilities and walking route to the village was to be found. I don’t have a pretty receptionist sitting behind a desk all day waiting for a few campers to arrive.
I phoned campers offering refunds or change of dates because of the storm and torrential rain which was all I could do under the circumstances. Normally I like to meet visitors and chat about farming and the local area etc but there’s things to do, it’s a farm, people like coming because it’s a working farm, no tv room, no bar, no drying room, no reception area. Basic camping on a farm, with farm animals, great views and a friendly host when she’s not out battling the elements lambing sheep.😑

Friendly owner, suitable small site. 40 mins walk to nice village and good location for the southern lakes. Hut quite quirky and fun.

    Disliked:

Limited toilets and very basic showers. Not really enough facilities for the amount of campers. Could have been cleaner and better maintained.

Washing up hot water tap not over sink

From the manager...

Glad you enjoyed you stay. The hot tap isn’t over the sinks as some campers were washing their pots with the hot tap constantly running (not using washing up bowls) resulting in hot water running out. This system prevents hot water wastage 👍

Items left in carriage from previous occupants and back of fire was coming away slightly.
