Who’s up for a glamping break in a wooded valley in north-eastern Catalonia? At Can Bora Lodges, half an hour’s drive from Girona, you can switch off and recharge your batteries in style, whether by chilling in the outdoor pool (or around it, with a drink from the honesty bar) or by booking a massage.
The luxury lodges at this intimate site come with real beds (bed linen and towels are also provided), and an excellent night’s sleep will be aided by the peaceful rural location. One of the best local routes (also suitable for hiking) follows a former narrow-gauge railway line from Olot (50 minutes’ drive) to Girona and runs past forested stretches and pleasant streams.
On hot summer’s days, you can hire a kayak and paddle along the Ter river, or have a go at canyoning. And, of course, the beaches of the Costa Brava are less than an hour’s drive away. Pretty coves and sheltered stretches of sand along the coast include Platja de Canyelles, where you can sit in the shade of pine trees, and Cala Treumal, with clear waters for snorkelling.
Back at the site, you can fire up the barbecue (provisions can be purchased in Bonmatí, a five-minute drive away) or head out to a restaurant to sample the local specialities.

Local attractions
Stretching along the Ter river, Girona is a pretty town with an imposing cathedral known for its 23-metre wide Gothic nave. Stroll through the narrow alleyways of the Jewish Quarter or atop the medieval fortifications (stopping to take in the views), and visit the ancient Arab baths before having a soak at one of several spas in town.
There are observation points all around the Pantà de Susqueda (35 minutes’ drive) from where you can admire this rugged, vegetation-fringed reservoir. When the water level is low, it’s possible to catch a glimpse of the ruined Church of Sant Romà, which was submerged when the dam was built.
A magnet for birdwatchers, who can spot booted eagles, grey herons and green woodpeckers, the Natural Park of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone (one hour) is dotted with volcanic cones and lava flows, and laced with hiking trails. Among the highlights of the reserve are the vertiginous basaltic cliffs at Castellfollit de la Roca.
