High, high in the mountains… Camping Trevélez is in the Alpujarras region at an elevated position of 1,500 metres up in the Las Alpujarras mountain range. It's in Sierra Nevada Natural Park, a scenic landscape of hiking paths, forests and green river valleys – so as you might figure, the views here are pretty stunning. And if you want a traditional Andalusian village within easy reach too? Trevélez is a five-minute walk from the site. This scenic village is one of the highest in Spain – bring the camera – and has restaurants and a museum about the famed Trevélez ham (a must-try in the restaurants). For a crisp drink with a view, the site has a bar with a terrace overlooking the surrounding mountains, serving breakfast, pizza and bread. There is also an on-site grocery shop selling local produce and a swimming pool that is open in summer when the weather permits.

Route directions

From Granada On the A92, take the exit signposted Lanjarón-Alpujarra and follow the directions to Trevélez. You will find signs for the campsite on your way. From Motril On the A92, take the exit signposted Orgiva-Alpujarra and follow the directions to Trevélez.

Local attractions

Camping Trevélez's local village – and its surroundings – are excellent: this is one of the highest areas in Spain and well regarded by mountaineers as a starting point for ascending the peaks of Mulhacén (3482m), Veleta (3398m) and Alcazaba (3366m). Paragliding is another popular option in the area, but if the thought makes you dizzy, you can stay on land for other outdoor activities like cycling, hiking, trout fishing and mountain biking around the campsite and in the national park. Elsewhere in the natural park, the Sierra Nevada Ski Station has the highest peak in southern Spain and is the most southerly ski resort in Europe for downhill days, or you could have a more placid time wildlife watching wherever you fancy among the park's Spanish ibex, wild boar, birds of prey, pine martens, wildcats and badgers.

Grand spot nestled by mountains, handy for Trevélez. Staff are lovely, facilities spotless (showers are boss!), and pitches are massive. Pool's a treat too. Mostly dead quiet, though a few reckon some bits are a bit old-fashioned, and getting in with big vans can be a bother. Wi-Fi's only near reception.

Liked Great host, great location. equipped with everything. The trail from the campsite to Trevelez was great! One of the best parts of the trip.

Disliked The door to the male restroom would not close all the way. It was only 12 degrees, but I can imagine how cold it could be when trying to shower with a 3/4 closed door in the winter.

Liked We really enjoyed our time at Camping Trevelez. During our stay in mid to late Sep there weren´t that many other visitors so were able to get a pitch away from other people. We also had the swimming pool almost to ourselves. Other likes
- clean bathrooms
- great views of the mountains
- as easy 15 minute walk to Trevelez village
- a nice bar on the site
